Sammy's Story

Let's talk about our beautiful Lab sisters Sammy (salmon collar) and Bo (blue collar)!
We knew these ladies would be hard to adopt out because their condition (Megaesophagus) sounds so scary and hard to manage in the home. We get that and while it is a serious condition, it also is one that isn't terribly hard to manage!
We will post their story below but these ladies have been with us for months and that was on purpose. We wanted and needed them to get comfortable and trained to their feeding accommodations! They have MASTERED them now and will be move in ready for any adopter!
Sammy and Bo eat out of specialized chairs that keep them in the upright position so that food can easily get from their mouth to their stomachs. They eat normal puppy kibble (nutrisource medium breed puppy) that has been soaked with water. We also add in non flavored Gelatin cubes for hydration. They eat like pros!
They do sit in their chairs for about 15 mins after eating and do that very well also! Then they can go about their day normally. These ladies will go home with their own personal chair when they get adopted so there will not be that added expense.
A few things that make life different for them:
1. They cannot drink water straight from a bowl
2. They cannot go swimming
3. They cannot have snacks or treats when out an about with the exception of the human baby puff snacks that resolve in their mouths
Aside from that, they live normally! They run and play, they go for walks, they go to the local patios to socialize, they love other dogs, they play with toys, they cuddle just like any other puppy.
We know they deserve to live a long happy life just like any other puppy and they can! They should not have any other health conditions due to this condition.
If you have any interest in one of these ladies, please reach out and let's set up a meeting and greet!
Their story:
Bo and Sammy were born at the end of June. They are purebred British Labrador Retrievers who are sisters. At about 12 weeks old their breeder noticed that they were having issues keeping their food and water down after eating. They were not gaining the weight they should be either. When taken to their vet it was discovered that they have a congenital condition called Megaesophagus. This is when the part of the stomach that is suppose to tighten at the top to keep the food down does not function correctly and in turn causes their Esophagus to stretch out. When this happens food that they swallow comes right back out. It is called regurgitation, not vomiting.
These ladies love other dogs but also need to be adopted separately. We do not adopt littermate puppies due the risk of litter mate syndrome. They have been housed separately but eat together in side by side chairs.
You will not meet sweeter girls! Bo would be an excellent running partner and she is the more outgoing and mischievous sister 😉
