Sammy's Story

Meet Sammy
Sammy is a 7-year-old Maltipoo weighing about 15 lbs, with soft white/cream curls and a personality that fills the room. He is a little dog with a BIG presence and is pretty sure the world revolves around him—and honestly, he might be right.

Sammy came to Dogworks after his former foster was faced with an unfortunate health situation and made the heartbreaking decision to give him up so he could receive the care she knew he deserved. He was deeply loved, and it shows in how strongly he bonds to his people.

His Perfect Life

A Constant Companion: Sammy’s greatest wish is to be with his person as much as possible. He is a true Velcro dog and would thrive in a home where someone works from home or is retired. While he can free-roam the house without issue, he becomes unhappy when confined and will protest being separated from his people, especially in an x-pen.

Couch Potato Goals: Sammy has minimal activity needs and is happiest lounging on the couch, rolling on your lap for scritches, or patrolling the house for crumbs. Light outdoor time and short walks are fine, but he much prefers staying warm and cozy inside.

The Big Bed Dream: Sammy spent years sleeping in bed with his humans. While he currently sleeps in a crate with an attached x-pen at night for management with other dogs, his dream is to find a home where he can once again crawl under the covers with his person—especially in a home where he is the only dog or has a compatible companion.

Important Details

Sammy is a quiet, chill little guy who rarely vocalizes. When he does, it’s usually soft chirps or cries, most often when confined. He is social and does well meeting new adults but prefers a calm, adult-only home where he can be the “baby.” He does not enjoy rough handling, fast movements, or being snatched up and needs a gentle, patient touch.

He currently co-exists well with other dogs and sticks up for himself with more bossy personalities. He is also completely uninterested in cats. Sammy can be possessive of his food and space, so he should be fed separately from other dogs.

Sammy has not had much experience with formal leash walks, especially due to cold weather, but he enjoys going outside with his person and would likely enjoy light walks in warmer months. He does not require a fenced yard and has no desire to wander, as his focus is firmly on food and affection. However, supervision is important due to his small size and confidence.

The “Why” Behind His Setup

Sammy currently uses a crate with an attached x-pen at night to keep the peace with other resident dogs. He is not a fan of confinement and much prefers free roaming near his person. In a calmer home environment, particularly as an only dog, he would love to graduate back to sleeping in the big bed.

The Sammy “CEO” Experience

Sammy isn’t just a dog—he’s a tiny executive with a heart of gold. He confidently marches around the house like he’s checking everyone’s productivity and proudly carries his toys around like trophies. When it’s cuddle time, he launches full lap-acrobat missions, rolling and wiggling to make sure you hit all the right scratch spots.

He is a dream to handle during care routines and even helps when it’s time to put on his belly band by squatting and spreading his back legs—equal parts helpful and hilarious.

Daily Life With Sammy

Sammy is an early riser who goes straight outside to potty, usually needing a little “fiddling time” before finishing his business. During the day, he enjoys naps, food puzzles, training for treats, and relaxing near his people. Evenings are spent patrolling for crumbs, carrying toys, and settling in for cuddle time or a movie marathon.

Training & Notes

Sammy knows basic cues like sit, come, and leave it, and he is highly food motivated. He responds well to verbal correction and will comply, though he may sulk a bit afterward. He is near fully potty trained but currently marks indoors and wears a belly band. This behavior may improve in a consistent routine or as an only dog.

Sammy can be hand-shy and fearful of quick movements, so patience and gentle handling are essential. He dislikes being confined away from his people and may cry if separated, though he does better when free roaming.

The Ideal Home

Sammy would do best in a calm, adult-only home with a patient adopter who understands small-dog sensitivities and appreciates a confident, affectionate companion. He can live with other respectful dogs or be perfectly happy as the center of attention.

Quietly confident, deeply loyal, and endlessly entertaining, Sammy is a couch potato with a CEO strut and a sensitive heart. If you’re looking for a devoted companion who wants to be your shadow, your cuddle buddy, and your tiny boss, Sammy is ready to take his place right by your side!

He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, and his unmanly flea/tick and heartworm prevention.

His adoption fee is $350.

Follow the link below for his adoption application. DogWorks Inc. Canine Rescue and Placement's Adoption Policy
Dogworks strives to place dogs into permanent homes based on the dogs' personalities and yours. To adopt a dog, we require a completed application, signed adoption contract, and home visit. Applications can be submitted online, by mail, or in person at adoption events. Once your application has been submitted, we will contact your references and consider suitability. You will be contacted by phone or email, typically within 4 business days, to make arrangements for adoption. If a particular dog is not placed with you, it does not mean that your application has been rejected. Dogworks receives multiple applications for some dogs. Foster families always have the first option to adopt. We do not approve applications on a first come basis as we strive for placement that is best for the dog and adoptive family. The home environment, family composition and yard are very important considerations in our decision to place a dog in a home. Some dogs do not do well with young children or cats, and our hounds require a fenced yard as examples of our decision process. Adoption fees are variable (typically $125-$500.00) and are listed with the description of each dog. All fees collected are used to cover rescue expenses, including foster care and veterinary expenses. Adoption fee will be refunded if you decide that the dog is not compatible with your family within 2 weeks. All dogs have received age appropriate vaccinations, GI dewormer, and heartworm test prior to adoption if they are old enough. Adult dogs and puppies older than 12 weeks are spayed/neutered. Adopters of younger puppies may be required to sign an agreement to complete spay/neuter by 5 months of age. We will assist with spay/neuter costs. All of our dogs and puppies will be microchipped prior to adoption. Adopters will receive a copy of medical records when adoption contract has been signed and adoption fees have been paid in full. Requirements for adoption: Please be aware that your adoption application WILL NOT be approved by Dogworks unless ALL of these criteria are met: >Adopters must be within a one hour radius of Toledo. >Adopters must be at least 21 years of age. >Veterinary reference must be positive. >All dogs in the home must be spayed/neutered. >All members of the household must be in agreement to adopt. >Individual needs of the dog must be met in prospective home (e.g., fully fenced yard for all hounds).
