SAM's Story

Who is a good boy? It’s Sam! Sam was found as a stray with a broken, rusted chain around his neck that had cut into his skin. We are so glad he broke free and came to us, what a sweetheart he is! Sam is about a year old, and is neutered. He is a purebred smooth coat Border Collie who weighs about 36lb right now, he could probably gain a little bit more weight. He is very active and playful and loves his toys! He can catch a frisbee like a champion and runs like the wind. He loves water and will plunge right into the lake. He gets along with all dogs he has met so far, he is super respectful, a little submissive and up for a wrestling match any time. Sammy typically ends up being the goofy looking one at the bottom of a puppy pile. He is good with the resident cat but wants to play. He adores all people, always excited to meet someone new. He has met a few kids and was a little unsure but sweet. Sam is crate trained and used to sleeping in a crate at night.

Clearly neglected until he was found, he still has a lot to learn. Initially, he had a fear of walking through the door, both to go in and out but he has conquered that fear almost completely, with an occasional moment of hesitation. Tasty treats definitely help. Other things to work on would be his exuberant greeting style, he tends to jump up on people and needs to work on keeping his paws on the ground. Despite his love for people he can still be a little head shy and hesitant to come to us when called, we would definitely not trust him off leash outside a fenced in area. He walks pretty well on a leash although he can get excited and starts to pull when he senses a body of water nearby. Sam loves car rides and has learned to jump into the car, now he needs to work on not exiting the car like a cannonball. He is housebroken but we would anticipate that there could be an accident or two when put into a new environment. Sammy will help you keep your house tidy, he will remind you to put away your shoes by lovingly chewing on them if left out!

Sam would do best in a household with another playful dog to give him confidence. He needs a securely fenced yard. If you have the patience to work with Sammy with lots of positive reinforcement you will be rewarded by the most loving, fun dog you could imagine.

SAM is located in Holly Springs, NC.
