Saige aka White Red Snowman Collar's Story

Meet Saige!
Saige is a sweet, sensitive little girl with a gentle heart and a love for snuggles. She enjoys being close to her people and is happiest when she's getting love and reassurance.

She is being lovingly raised around children, various-sized dogs, and a cat, giving her a wonderful start in everyday household life. Saige can be naturally submissive and a little nervous when meeting new people, but she still loves attention and wants to connect — she just needs a little patience and kindness to help her feel safe.

Saige is also a smart puppy who loves to learn. She is currently learning to walk on a loose leash and already knows how to sit on command, as well as “Down” and “No.”

Once you get to know her, Saige's playful side really shines. She's a happy girl who loves to wrestle, play with her toys, and enjoy being part of the fun.

With a calm, understanding home, Saige is sure to blossom into a loving, devoted, and eager-to-please companion.

Saige is part of the litter of 7 6-week-old pups we welcomed in February with upper respiratory infections, who had already been started on doxycycline at the shelter. Each puppy required a second round of antibiotics after the initial seven-day treatment. Fortunately, they were spared from strep zoo during their stay at the shelter, despite their compromised immune systems due to the respiratory infections. As a preventive measure, they also received an antibiotic shot because the shelter had closed due to a strep zoo outbreak. We held our breath for 10 days and were relieved when none of the puppies showed signs of strep zoo, ensuring the safety of our resident dogs as well.

The puppies were placed in pairs in foster homes, and each puppy has visited the vet for check-ups, boosters, deworming, and preventive care. Five of the pups have been placed in their adoptive homes, while Saige and Carlee are excited to meet their forever families.

Thanks to the dedicated shelter staff and volunteers, the puppies received excellent care during their time at the shelter, where they grew and weaned from their mother before arriving in our care. The mother has since been adopted through the shelter.

When the entire litter arrived, they were fully weaned and happily enjoying softened kibble mixed with canned food, which is typical for 6-week-olds. Despite having runny noses and congestion from the upper respiratory infection, their appetites remained strong. They were happy, brave pups with outgoing, social personalities. We have guided them through their first fear period by supporting their needs and addressing environmental exposures.

In their foster homes, they have continued to thrive as playful pups full of mischief and love. Now that they are 15 weeks old, they are ready to find their forever homes.

We have given them lots of love and snuggles while introducing them to the wider world through outings. They are learning to navigate stairs, potty train, exhibit household manners, take car rides, and coexist with other dogs, cats, and children, depending on their foster home.

Saige, who sports a white collar with red snowmen, loves her crate in the pen area for meals and prefers to sleep in the large pen where her crate is located. Although she had been a bit slower to grasp potty training than Echoe, she was the first to consistently use the litter box in her pen area during downtime. Playing and having fun are her big priorities, including car rides for outings.

Saige loves to sit for attention and is generously rewarded for it. She's graduated from learning to wear a leash by having it clipped and unclipped while moving around, to mastering loose leash walking. Siage and Echoe became accustomed to regular nail trims early on and are easy to handle and calm. Saige is sleeping through the night without accidents.

We are looking to find Saige and Carlee homes with individuals who are experienced with German Shepherds and can provide the time and resources necessary for training, positive environmental exposure, and the structure German Shepherds need to thrive and develop into well-balanced companions.

Have you seen our YouTube channel? We'd love your support—please subscribe, like, and comment on our videos featuring our adoptable shepherds. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and our new Threads account for more updates and news about our shepherds.

As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes always needs more foster families. So many shepherds in our local shelters are waiting for a fresh start. Would you open your home and your heart to help a shepherd find a new family? You provide the love, and we'll take care of the rest. Saying yes today truly saves a life. Fill out our foster form at https://www.shepheroes.org/foster-form, and we'll get in touch soon.
