Rutabaga's Story

Meet Rutabaga, a gentle and resilient girl who's ready to find her way into a loving home after being found as a stray who ran into an apartment building for safety. This sweet, medium-sized brindle beauty may start off a little shy, but once she feels comfortable, her soft and affectionate personality shines through.
Rutabaga walks at her own calm pace, taking time to stop and sniff every interesting scent along the way.

She's easy to leash, doesn't pull, and seems to be trying to stay housetrained-always ready to go as soon as she gets outside. While she's more of an explorer than a player at first, once she feels safe, she'll open up and show her silly side, even getting the zoomies and hopping up for affection. She loves butt and back scratches, often leaning in for more once she knows she can trust you.

Rutabaga would do best in a patient and quiet home where she can continue to build her confidence at her own pace. Because she was previously exposed to Canine Parvovirus, her future family should consult with their vet about any needed aftercare.

Whether through foster, adoption, or rescue, Rutabaga is looking for someone who will give her the time and love she needs to truly blossom. Once she does, you'll see what a tender-hearted companion she really is.

Videos:
Rutabaga meets Mr Putnam: https://youtu.be/CqgDHIofL1U?si=1PaauOeOzsJHmyxX

Rutabaga loves booty scratches: https://youtube.com/shorts/JVJeSNey0qE?si=TxINvvyIbqSKyaBe

Meet Rutabaga: https://youtube.com/shorts/l3-_1YJYDOo?feature=share

Payton and Rutabaga Meet: https://youtu.be/ur-dca05dOQ

Willow and Rutabaga Meet: https://youtu.be/HTKGiACxUNM

Behavior Notes:

10/17 Per foster- Here an update. She is super sweet you almost don't know she's there. Obviously a bit scared and getting acclimated. I noticed her poops are very yellow and soft and she licking her paws a lot which could be a good intolerance so we're gonna switch her over to ground beef and rice.
She also has a slight limp. She does very well on a leash and spent the night with us in our bedroom
She literally did not move all night
She seems very content for the moment in her dog bed

Walk sheet notes:
9/27 - Was hesitant to come out of kennel, staff had to carry her halfway through the kennels until she was past the loud dogs and then she walked the rest of the way. Low energy
9/30 - Hesitant to come out of kennel, shy, and low energy
10/1 - Shy
10/7 - Very low energy, no pulling at all on leash, great dog to walk
10/10 - Good girl, but scared
10/12 - A bit low energy, loves butt and back scratches, gets the zoomies, allows all handling
10/14 - So sweet, walks very slow and gently. Stayed close to her handler and allowed gentle petting before getting a little energy burst

Per volunteer 10/14: Rutabaga was a slow and brave girl. She was slow to move and didn't pull at all. She moved at a slow pace and didn't want to walk too far. She got outside and hung close to my legs and accepted pets all over. She eventually opened up and got excited when I stopped or readjusted and jumped up on me for a moment.

Per volunteer 10/12: Miss Rutabaga is definitely starting to come out of her shell. She was easy to leash and quickly went outside - she is clearly trying to stay housetrained, as she went to the bathroom right away when we got outside. Like others have mentioned, she loves to take her time sniffing on the walk, but she was fairly easy to direct. She isn't particularly interested in treats, but she came over to me when I sat on the ground. She looooves butt and back scratches and would lean into me when I was petting her, allowing all over handling - she got the zoomies and loved running around together in the play yard. After we played a bit together, she was definitely more handler oriented on the walk back inside, checking in with me as we walked back into the building and she would perk up when I came back to her kennel.

Per volunteer 9/30/25: Meet Rutabaga! This sweet, medium-sized mixed breed girl has a beautiful brindle coat and is ready to find her forever home.
Rutabaga is a little shy at first and takes some time to warm up. She enjoys exploring her surroundings and taking in all the smells on a walk, but she can be a little hesitant when leashed and likes to stop and sniff. She seems more interested in exploring than playing, and she might need some time to feel comfortable enough to show her playful side.
Rutabaga is looking for a patient and understanding owner who can provide her with a calm and quiet environment where she can decompress and build confidence. Because of her past exposure to Canine Parvovirus, her new family will need to consult with their veterinarian about any potential aftercare.
With a little love and patience, Rutabaga is sure to blossom into a wonderful companion. Could you be the one to give her the loving home she deserves? Come meet Rutabaga today!

Per volunteer 9/30/25: When I approached her kennel, she was looking up at me with a slightly stiff body. I opened the door slightly to leash her, and she came forward with a tucked tail. She dodged the leash once, and then I was able to loop her and she hesitated slightly when I was adjusting the clasp of the leash. She's a dainty and very tiny gal! She walks slowly, taking in all the smells. When I used leash pressure and she wasn't done smelling she would resist without moving forward. In the play yard she was pretty nervous with a tucked tail and kept space from me. I tossed a few pieces of pepperoni her way and she showed no interest. Once she sniffed around for a few minutes, I approached her with pepperoni and she sniffed it, but didn't take it. Not very motivated that I saw, might just be shut down. I sat down on the ground for a while to see if she approached me and she still kept to herself.

Per staff 9/29/25:
Kennel Presentation: sitting on the bed when I approached. Ears forward, hard eyes with a closed mouth.
Leash Skills: Easy to leash and walked through the kennels without hesitation.
Sociability: asocial. Came over to sniff me once or twice and then would walk away. More interested in sniffing and walking. Did not eat treats.
Play: n/a
Dog Interaction: ACA had a dog in the x pen. Neither dog showed interest.
Return to Kennel: No issues upon return to kennel.

Per staff 9/25/25: dog was scared but allowed me to leash her and lift her onto truck

Medical Notes:
URI 10/1/25: This dog has been observed to have shelter acquired upper respiratory infection (URI), or a "doggy cold". They have been started on medication, and will be monitored for resolution of the respiratory infection.

Intake 9/26/25:
Weight: 34.8 lbs
Body Condition Score: 5 - Ideal
Eyes - clear
Ears -clean
Nose - clear
Mouth/Teeth/Gums - mild staining , mild tartar on gum line
Coat & Skin - no live fleas , dirty fur
Urogenital -female intact
Gait/Mobility - no lameness
Attitude: bar scared

Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
