Rusty's Story

Rusty is a hound mix who was surrendered to the shelter with his brothers at just three months old. When we first met Rusty he was frozen in place struggling to want to move. It didn't take long before we decided to take him in as one of our fosters. When Rusty started his fifteen hour freedom ride from Texas to Minnesota he was curled up in a ball shaking, and feeling unable to move. A few hours in, he finally was able to decompress and fall asleep in a soft blanket. It seems he took shelter life the hardest of all of his brothers.

Rusty is naturally a very calm boy, and takes life at a slower pace. He tends to keep to himself most of the time. When the other foster puppies are playing together he'll usually find a quiet corner of the yard where he has freedom to follow his nose and take in the fresh air and sunshine. He gets easily overwhelmed so enjoys laying down and watching the others play and roughhouse. He does have a playful side to him, however! At times we'll find him wrestling with the boys, joining in on tug of war, or protecting his new toys. He does great with all the pets he's been introduced to, but because he's generally reserved and likes quiet, he would do best in a home without other dogs.

Rusty's least favorite parts of baths are, well, the bath. His favorite part is getting wrapped up in a soft towel when it's over! Rusty LOVES soft things. Think blankets, beds, sweaters, and pillows. His favorite activity is curling up in a pile of blankets and taking a nap next to the heat vent. Because he is originally a Texas pup, he isn't fond of cold weather just yet! He is shorthaired, so gets cold easily and starts shivering when temps are too low. When taking him outside in the winter be sure to not leave him out there for long! He prefers to stay nice and warm and bundled up indoors.

This gentle boy is kennel trained, but still looking for a patient companion to help him finish up some general training. But don't worry, he is a quick learner when snacks are around.

Because of his breed, we suspect he will be a big boy when he grows up. It would be best for him to live in a home with plenty of space and opportunities for him to explore. He is very curious and loves to follow his nose! We think he'd be a great adventure buddy for trips, hikes, and travels, he just needs more time to learn that leashes are safe, not scary. He loves car rides though, and will fall asleep when the car starts moving!

Rusty would want you to know he loves attention, people, and kids. He is usually shy at first when new people are around, but he soon opens up and gets excited to introduce himself. Just be prepared for a wagging tail and some kisses!

Rusty has been through so much and is looking for a companion who will be patient and gentle with him as he learns to thrive in the big world. He is extremely loyal and will be a perfect cuddle and adventure buddy for anyone who is looking to bring him into their home and commit to being his friend - for life.

Foster to contact: Hannah at loguefamily25@gmail.com

Adoption Fee: $550 (no checks)

Our fosters do the best they can to provide all information about the animal's background and temperament while in foster care in their home. An adopters routine and home environment is likely going to be different than that in their foster home. Sometimes there is more that comes out about a dog's personality once they have been able to settle in a home & truly become comfortable. There are great articles out there written about the different stages a pet goes through after adoption; discussing transitions that happen at 3 days, 3 weeks, & 3 months. We highly recommend reading about this - it will help you understand the transition your new pet goes through.

Last Hope, Inc. is an all volunteer, foster based, no kill rescue! You can see almost all of our dogs on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month from 11 am - 2 pm at Apple Valley Petco (7590 150th St W, Apple Valley, MN 55124)
Policies: You do not have to have a fence to adopt a dog from us, but some dogs will require a fence or acres to play, or an active family who will make sure the dog gets the exercise it needs to be happy. Some dogs do not have the temperament that will do well with young children.
The Adoption Fee is not enough to cover the vet bills. Sales tax of almost 7.25% is also included in the adoption fee that you see. Please consider donating to Last Hope to help us save these animals!
CAN YOU FOSTER?
