Rumi's Story

Rumi has settled in beautifully in her foster home. She started her new life experience with morning stroller rides alongside the resident shepherds and, after receiving her booster vaccines, has confidently graduated to leash walks. Rumi enjoys car rides and relaxes comfortably in her pen when her family is away. When her playmates aren't available, she keeps herself entertained and regularly spends time with the extended family's corgis while sharing her foster home with two resident shepherds.

This smart girl quickly mastered the self-closing screen door to the backyard, making potty breaks a breeze. Keen to please, she responds well to kind coaching and redirection when needed.

This adorable puppy sleeps soundly through the night, goes into her crate when asked, and settles in right away. She knows sit, down, and other household manners, making her a wonderful fit for a shepherd-loving forever home. As she's grown, Rumi has graduated to a hot pink collar and leash and has chosen her favorite toys.

Rumi is agile, confident in her body parts, and fun. She loves to zoom, leap over obstacles with a buddy in an alternating chase game, and have a blast. She needs time to assess her new environment and observe the other dogs before she joins the shenanigans and makes friends. Rumi bonds hard with a new person in a novel environment, like a relief foster home, and may ask resident dogs to step away from her new person. With clear yet gentle direction, she fits into the pack, and her behavior melts away. Her adopters should recognize that it stems from insecurity, providing the structure to ease her into their household and any resident dogs. She'll do well with knowledge adopters and neutral dogs in the household. She integrated into an experienced shepherd household with 4 resident shepherds and a foster puppy within an afternoon, striving to please.

Rumi caught a ride to Sacramento for her scheduled spay, spending multiple days pre- and post-surgery at a multi-dog foster home near the hospital before catching a ride back to her San Jose foster home, and was a terrific little gal throughout her vet stay. Rumi also visited Paws n Play Sacramento, where she met new people, socialized with Odie (a ShepHeroes alum), and settled into a busy training facility with lots of dogs eating lots of treats for good behavior. Upon meeting Sparkles, the resident shop cat, Rumi showed us that she may not be cat-friendly.

Rumi and her sister Lulu arrived safely at their foster homes thanks to Pilots and Paws, and we are so grateful for their support in getting these sweet puppies to safety so quickly. In their arrival photos, Rumi sports a bright red leash while Lulu wears a variegated one. Both girls were rescued from an orchard along with their littermates, where they bravely fended for themselves until help arrived. After receiving much-needed veterinary care, we were thrilled to welcome these three-month-old cuties into loving foster families!

Once cleaned up from their time in the fields, Rumi and Lulu quickly revealed their affectionate natures and settled right in. Lulu has since found her forever family. Rumi is waiting for her perfect forever family—a home that will carry on the great work started by her foster families. She is ready for a future packed with love and happy moments.

Have you checked out our YouTube channel? ShepHeroes's Adoption Policy
Our dogs are available to meet approved adopters through appointments and at various posted events throughout Northern California. Since each GSD we rescue has been let down by their previous caregivers, we are committed to ensuring that their second chance is a forever one. Our adoption application allows us to find the best possible match for them and for you. The decision to adopt a pet is an important one that we take seriously. Please take the time to read the questions and carefully complete the application. Please include full explanations with as much information as possible - this will help us with the review of your application If renting, your landlord's consent is required to proceed with your application. Our landlord permission form is embedded in the application and is required before your application can be processed. We primarily assist at-risk dogs and serve adopters in Northern California. We are currently focused in the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Placer, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma and Yolo, and on a limited basis the Ft. Bragg area of Mendocino County and Lake Tahoe region of Washoe County, NV. Our area of coverage shifts based on volunteer resources. As an all-volunteer rescue, we may not respond as quickly as we would like. We appreciate your patience while we work through the adoption process. Our goal is to respond to you within a week of your application. 1. Submit Application We seek adopters with previous GSD or large breed experience for the best fit and prefer to adopt within our local geographic region. 2. Interview After submission, you'll receive an email indicating the status of your application and information on assignment to an adoption counselor (AC). 3. Home Check After your interview, your AC will arrange for your home visit (HV). All household members & resident dogs should attend that meeting. 4. Meet the Pet After your HV and once approved, you'll be able to meet potential matches. All household members & resident dogs should attend the meetings. 5.
