Rosie's Story

Adoption Area: East Tennessee

Rosie needs:

A calm adult household
Someone home part of the day to allow Rosie to go out every few hours
Regular grooming and baths
Someone able to administer eye drops and medications on a regular basis

Hi, Im Rosie! Im a 10-year-old female Schnauzer mix and I weigh just under 20 pounds. Before coming to SBRET my health and grooming had been neglected for quite some time. I needed a lot of cleaning up, and my skin was in bad shape. I had about a dozen small benign growths removed from my body, and even though my salt-and-pepper coat is coming back in nicely from having been shaved, there are thin patches that remain from past allergies and infection. Ive been treated for fungal infection in my ears, and that is much better now. I have a good appetite, great teeth and a healthy heart for an older gal, but I do have cataracts and am hard of hearing. Im not completely deaf loud noises sometimes startle me and I run and hide but if you need my attention, its best to let me see you rather than calling my name.

I do well on a leash to go outside, and Im a good little walker if you want to take me on a greenway, paved trail or around your neighborhood. I can be shy when encountering other dogs or people, but I eventually warm up, especially if there are head rubs or chin scratches involved. I prefer quieter environments and if there is a lot of noise or activity, I may just go chill in a crate or bed in a safe place. I dont mind a crate or xpen at all and often go in one voluntarily to nap or rest. At night I sleep quietly in a crate in my foster parents bedroom, and when they are gone for a couple of hours during the day I am a good girl and can be left out without having to be crated or contained.

I am housetrained and will often go stand by the door when I need to go out. But do remember, I am an older dog and I do have some problems with incontinence. I am on an inexpensive medicine (Proin) that helps but hasnt cured me completely. I dont leave puddles in the house, but you may find wet spots in my bedding where Ive peed while relaxed or sleeping. Youll want to have pee pads or diapers available to help with this, and please check my bedding frequently to make sure everything stays dry and clean.

I ride well in the car (crated) and am not barky at all. Though I do like a nice walk and can do steps okay, x-rays show that my spine is arthritic and for that reason I should not be allowed to try to jump up on or down from furniture on my own. In addition to the medicine I take for incontinence, I take a joint supplement and a melatonin supplement, recommended by the vet to help keep me healthy and comfortable. I also have dry eye and require prescription eye drops twice a day to keep my eyes clear. I take all of these things like a champ, though no drama queen here.

If youre ready for a special companion with soulful eyes and a calm demeanor, then Im your girl. Ive been spayed, microchipped and Im up to date on all my vaccines and preventatives. My adoption fee is $100.
