Romeo Feb 26 - ready March 11's Story

Looking for your next furry BFF?

We don’t have perfect dogs — but we do have dogs who are perfect for the right someone. Our goal is to match each dog with the home that fits them best and each home with the dog that will sing to your heart.

Ready to adopt? Complete an application at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org/application

Date into Rescue: 2/15/2026 - please note Romeo has a follow up appointment 3/11/26 to take stitches out from his dental surgery and can go home after that date

Reason for being in rescue: Romeo has been used for many years as a stud dog for a backyard breeder. When she became ill, he finally was able to be rescued and came to the poodle farm to find a new life as a pet
Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC
Special Needs? Romeo has had extensive medical work done. When he arrived, one eye was matted shut with a ball of nasty hair and packed with dirty, wet straw around what used to be a space for an eye - and it turns out that while the remnants of an eye was behind the filth, it was too far gone to be saved. Our vet took out the remaining tissue to reduce the pain. Romeo is now a one-eyed wonder. He's also missing quite a few teeth. We extracted 21 teeth and others had fallen out long ago from neglect. The good news is he does have his lower canines, and they are important as they stabilize the jaw. Our vet recommends he be put on a good brushing protocol and be checked regularly for dental wear and for cleaning of those remaining teeth. Greenies anyone!
Weight: 7.1 lbs - he is lean and could stand to add half a pound
Height: 8 in at the shoulder
Spayed/Neutered: Yes
Adoption Fee: $499
Fence needed? No

What kind of home would be best for me? Romeo would do best in a loving home that is ready to show him what the world is really about. He does not know he is “handicapped.” He is handicapable. He has likely been without vision in that eye for so long that he simply adapted — and he moves through life with confidence and curiosity. A calm, patient home will help him continue building that confidence.

Because he’s tiny and still learning about the big wide world, a home without rough play or chaotic energy would suit him well. What he really needs is someone who will take him places, introduce him to new experiences slowly, and cheer him on as he discovers how fun life can be.

What is my personality like? Romeo is sweet, happy, and quietly eager. He doesn’t know much about the world yet — and it shows in the most endearing way. Everyday things are still new to him. But underneath that inexperience is a gentle, joyful little dog who truly wants to go out, see things, and do things. There’s a spark there. His physical condition (aside from those troublesome teeth) is actually very good. His bloodwork showed he is healthy inside, and now that he feels better, you can see that light starting to shine. This is a dog stepping into his second chapter.

Romeo is a little wiggly on the grooming table, which makes perfect sense considering it had likely been years since he was properly groomed before coming into rescue. With consistency and positive experiences, that will absolutely improve.

He adapts beautifully to his one-eyed perspective and doesn’t miss a beat. He eats well, feels better than he has in a long time, and is ready to learn what it means to be someone’s beloved companion. Romeo doesn’t see himself as limited — and neither should anyone else. It’s his time now.

How do I act when I first meet new people? Romeo may be a bit unsure at first, mostly because so much of life is still unfamiliar. But he is not fearful — just learning. He warms up quickly to kind voices and gentle hands. Once he feels safe, his sweet and affectionate nature comes forward. He truly wants connection.

Other tips and tidbits: We were given no documentation of any kind and had to make assumptions. Based on teeth, condition of the remaining eye, behavior and personality, we believe Romeo is about 8 years old, a senior but not ancient. We've given him a birthdate of 2/10/2018 but the day he will truly celebrate with you will be the day you take him home - his "gotcha" day. That will be the day the life of a treasured companion truly begins.

House trained? Romeo was a stud dog all his life and most likely lived mostly outside, a logical assumption based on the amount of dirt and straw we found on him. He is for the most part clean in his crate and that is step one. He will need reminders in the house. Since he's never had a house, it is logical he needs to learn what it means to live in one. Besides, he looks adorable in a belly band. Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
Potential Adopters

Dogs can’t drive - and since we’re busy taking care of them, we can’t either! Please check your potential BFF’s location and make sure you’re comfortable traveling to meet them.

Want updates and ways to help?
