ROCKY's Story

03/15/26 15:34 Rocky needs foster, rescue or adoptive placement due to experiencing high stress in the kennel environment. Some days he does better than others, but most days he is visibly frustrated with being in a kennel. He goes out regularly for play time with volunteers and is very treat motivated - so it's likely he will be easy to train in a stable environment. He has been observed vocalizing and pulling on his leash in the direction of other dogs and cats, but this behavior has not escalated. A slow introduction with other dogs would be best, a home without cats is recommended. Please come to the shelter or contact SJrescue@sanjoseca.gov to inquire about Rocky! MH 02/25/26 15:21 Placing on needs rescue due to high kennel stress/ stereotypic behaviors such as spinning in kennel, barking, pacing back and forth. Needs urgent rescue. Meet Rocky – The Energetic and High-Spirited Boy.

This 4-year-old, neutered Pit Bull mix is a high-energy, high-FAS dog who can be reactive in the kennel but shows moments of curiosity and engagement. While in his kennel, Rocky often barks, pants, spins, circles, and jumps, placing his paws on the walls and doors. These behaviors indicate kennel stress and a high arousal state, and he may show signs of declining mental well-being in this environment. When offered a hand, he will stop to sniff and gently touch it with his snout, showing that he can be curious and affiliative despite his stress.

Rocky can be challenging to handle at times. He has attempted leash biting when leaving or returning to his kennel, but he can be redirected with consistent guidance. He is easy to leash and walks well on leash once outside. He’s cooperative during handling in the courtyard, allowing staff to examine him with minimal difficulty. Rocky may fence fight when exiting the ward, so careful management and closed dividers are recommended.

This spirited boy needs a home that can provide structure, consistent training, and outlets for his energy. With guidance, patience, and enrichment, Rocky has the potential to be a devoted, engaging companion for someone experienced with high-arousal dogs. 03/30/26 What I did today: I hopped in the car and rode in style with my head out
the window, taking in every smell along the way. Out on the trail, I took
my time doing what I do best — a slow, leisurely stroll with plenty of sniff
breaks and a few relaxing pauses in the grass to watch the world go by. I
showed off my sit and paw for treats and proved I'm as charming as I
am chill!
What to know about this dog:
• Excellent loose leash walker — calm, unhurried, and happy to stroll
at his own pace
• Can be reactive to other dogs but is easily redirected with treats
• Highly treat-motivated and knows sit and paw
• A sweet couch potato who would thrive in a relaxed home that
appreciates a mellow, loving companion
Three words to describe me: Chill, Sweet, Charming
