Rocky's Story

Rocky is a 9-month-old Labrador Retriever/Hound mix who currently weighs about 26 pounds. His story began in a very difficult environment—he was rescued alongside 20 other dogs from a severe hoarding situation on a property where basic care and human kindness were nonexistent. During those early months, Rocky had to compete for food, shelter, and safety, and he never experienced the gentle, positive interactions that help puppies learn to trust people.

Because of this traumatic start, Rocky arrived in rescue unsure of the world around him and cautious of human touch. He is what we lovingly call a “project dog”—a pup who will need a very special adopter with patience, compassion, and the willingness to let him move at his own pace. While Rocky may be shy at first, underneath that timid exterior is a curious young dog who is slowly learning that the world can be a safe and loving place.

Where Rocky truly shines is with other dogs. He is the definition of a “dog’s dog.” His confidence grows tremendously when he has canine friends around him to guide the way. In the company of other dogs, his playful puppy personality comes to life—he loves romping around the yard, engaging in goofy wrestling matches, and catching joyful bursts of zoomies. After playtime, he’s happiest curling up beside his furry companions for a cozy nap. Because of how much he relies on other dogs for reassurance, Rocky must go to a home with at least one confident resident dog who can continue showing him the ropes.

Rocky is a gentle, quiet soul who does well with cats and can coexist with respectful older children who understand that he will need space and time to adjust. He won’t be the type of dog who immediately runs up for cuddles, but for the right person, watching Rocky slowly learn to trust and blossom will be an incredibly rewarding journey. Every small milestone—taking a treat from your hand, wagging his tail when he sees you, or choosing to sit beside you—will feel like a huge victory.

Rocky is looking for a calm, patient home that will celebrate his progress and allow him the time he needs to feel safe. With love, consistency, and the guidance of a canine sibling, we know this shy but curious boy will continue to grow into a wonderful companion.

Rocky is neutered, up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations, and microchipped.

**Please note: completing an "adoption inquiry" via Adopt-a-pet/Petfinder does not constitute an HFG Dog Rescue adoption application.
