Rocky's Story

Rocky is a 7-month old Labrador Retriever/Hound mix and weighs about 26 lbs. Rocky’s journey began in an incredibly difficult environment, having been rescued alongside 20 other dogs from a hoarding situation on a drug addict's property. In those early months, life was a constant struggle where he had to fight for basic necessities like food and shelter, all while experiencing zero positive interaction with people. Because he was raised in such a volatile setting without human kindness, Rocky arrived in rescue viewing the world with a great deal of suspicion. He is a true "project dog" who is looking for a very specific, patient kind of love to help him move past his traumatic beginnings.

While humans are still a mystery to him, Rocky’s heart completely opens up when he is around other dogs. He is the definition of a "dog’s dog," relying on his canine companions to show him how to navigate the world. When he is part of a pack, the shy, nervous puppy disappears and is replaced by a playful, bouncy spirit. He loves nothing more than engaging in wrestling matches, catching a serious case of the zoomies, and curling up for a warm snuggle with his furry friends. Without a canine sibling to lead the way, Rocky becomes extremely reserved and shut down; therefore, a home with at least one other confident dog is essential for his continued progress.

Rocky is a quiet, gentle soul who is perfectly compatible with cats and children, provided the children are old enough to respect his need for personal space and time to adjust. He won't be the kind of dog who jumps into your lap the moment you walk through the door, but for a patient adopter, the reward of watching his shell slowly crack is immeasurable. He is looking for a quiet, understanding forever home where he can continue to learn that humans can be just as kind as his canine best friends.

Rocky is neutered, up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations, and microchipped.

**Please note: completing an "adoption inquiry" via Adopt-a-pet/Petfinder does not constitute an HFG Dog Rescue adoption application. All adoption applications must be completed on www.hfgdr.org**

HFG Dog Rescue is a 100 percent foster-based rescue located in Berkeley Heights, NJ with a sister location, The Almost Home Wellness Center, in Aiken, SC.
