Rocco's Story

Rocco is a bouncy, chocolate Lab with the enthusiasm of a puppy and the sturdy body of a young dog about a year old and living his best "big puppy" life. He's a bundle of joy and energy who meets the world with curiosity, humour, and an open heart.<br/><br/>Rocco loves people; men, women, and strangers alike and shows his affection in the sweetest (if occasionally mouthy) ways. He'll gently hold your hand in his mouth to keep the cuddles going, not out of aggression, but because he wants to be as close as possible. He's learning that calm manners earn even more pets, and he's making great progress. Kids over 6 are a hit, and he's good with male dogs; female dogs are still a "to be determined."<br/><br/>Active and playful, Rocco thrives on walks, games, and being part of the action. He's crate trained, sleeps comfortably in his crate overnight (11 pm6:30 am) and can be crated during the day while the family is at work. He's a good eater who loves treats (sometimes a bit too much he'll swallow them whole!), drinks a lot, and pees frequently. With frequent bathroom breaks he's mostly house trained, though he's had a few accidents along the way.<br/><br/>Rocco knows sit, come, and leave it, and he's working on down, stay, wait, and other commands. He enjoys learning, though stay and wait are trickier when he's excited. On leash he's improving with a martingale collar, but his excitement can turn into pulling especially around other dogs and people. A fenced yard would be ideal so he can burn off energy safely. He'll bark at noises or someone at the door, but it's not excessive. New inanimate objects (recycling bins, moving chairs, clothes on a line) can make him nervous; he may back away and bark until he figures them out.<br/><br/>Health note: Rocco recently had cherry eye surgery (Sept 8) and is healing well; his vet recommends keeping his cone on a bit longer to protect the area.<br/><br/>Rocco is a very strong dog who doesn't yet know his own strength, and his spatial sense is still developing. With patience, consistent training, and plenty of love, he's poised to grow into a wonderfully well mannered companion. If you can offer an active home and a sense of humour, Rocco will reward you with endless wagging tails and wholehearted devotion.<br/><br/>Our adoption fees cover all up to date veterinary needs, including but not limited to: full veterinary examination, age appropriate vaccinations, fecal test and parasite prevention, wellness bloodwork, spay or neuter, and microchip. All dogs will be started on a 6 week trial of pet insurance after adoption. Local adopters can take advantage of 50% off a training course at Ruff Haus in Barrie (www.ruffhaus.ca) and all adopters will also be signed up for Petcademy to offer 30 days of free text-based behavioural support.<br/><br/>Please visit our website www.preciouspawsrescue.ca to submit an adoption application.

Precious Paws Rescue's Adoption Policy
Before inquiring about a specific dog for adoption, please ensure you have read their complete bio. We try to provide a complete description of each dog’s preferences in their write up including whether they are good with children and/or other pets. Adoption fees for each dog are also listed in their bio. If you still have questions about a dog you’re interested in please send us a message and one of our volunteers will respond as soon as possible. The first step if you are interested in adopting one of our available dogs is to complete our online Adoption Application at www.preciouspawsrescue.ca. Once your application is received one of our volunteers will review it and then get in touch with you to schedule a time for an interview. We will request a Zoom interview with you, so that we can complete your “phone interview” and “home visit” all at once. If these applications are not available to you we will schedule your phone interview first and, following that, we will schedule a home visit where a volunteer visits to meet all family members and see where the dog would be living. Our focus is on making the best match, not only for our rescue dogs, but also for our adoptive families. We want our adoptions to be successful for all involved so please understand that our adoption process is in place to ensure this happens. If you have any questions please get in touch!
