The very first thing that Rio the Maltese/Terrier mix wants to make clear is that he's a love and so very beautiful. In this sad shelter photo, we're not aware of the amazing coat hiding under the dirt and matts. It's so difficult to see his dark, expressive eyes that speak of hard times.. but now filled with new hope. With a sudsy bath, grooming, loving care and great nutrition, Rio's coat (and heart) will show its true beauty. <br/><br/>A loving world is new to Rio...his adorable little nose sniffs shyly at an outstretched hand...and then an ear to ear smile if it's a loving touch. And then before you know it, Rio is in your lap to express his devotion. He's very happy there because his human relationships are so important to him. We have to remember that Rio comes from a very tough shelter. As a result of harsh conditions, Rio is initially a bit shy. Give him just a minute.. when he's assured that all is well, he snuggles close. <br/><br/>This 2.5 - 3 year old and 7 lb Maltese/Terrier mix truly lights up when he feels like he's done a good job... some serious hugging and kind words will send him over the moon. Rio is such a people dog...he enjoys older kids (hasn't been tested with children under 12) but they definitely must be very gentle and handle him kindly. We envision Rio with loving retirees who seek an adorable and sweet dog as a family member and best friend or a younger family who would love..and have time to spend..with a new fuzzy family member. <br/><br/>Rio would be so excited to spend his days in the company of his favorite people. Being a Terrier mix, Rio loves physical exercise as well as mental stimulation. He would be a natural on the Colorado trails..and then when his little legs are tired, Rio would be perfect watching the trails below from a backpack. Rio's nature (once comfortable) is to be very joyful and fun-loving...frequently his silly and fun-loving nature takes over. <br/><br/>We've requested that Rio be neutered prior to his transport to Colorado. We're not optimistic that this will occur due to too many dogs and not enough vets in this industrial Kansas town. If it doesn't, Farfel's will be happy to cover all costs for Rio's neuter and microchip.<br/><br/>Rio will be transported to Denver on Friday 4/8/16.
