Riley's Story
"Riley" is an approx 5-yo neutered male GSD who is confident, playful, and trainable. Riley is healthy, up-to-date on core vaccinations, and microchipped.

Riley is affectionate and bonds quickly with his people. He is a little hand-shy initially, but that goes away once trust is established.

Riley is fairly protective of his people, especially when on leash. He is OK meeting strangers with a proper introduction and no surprise moves. His neck and hind quarters are very sensitive, and he has snapped at at least one person who has reached out to pet him on his neck. This is likely due to some rough treatment previously in which Riley was probably grabbed by his collar. However, Riley has no problem allowing a leash to be attached to his collar.

Riley has not been around any children since we rescued him in early August. He would likely be OK with kids older than twelve years. Due to his sensitivity around his neck and hindquarters, we do not recommend that Riley go to a home with younger kids.

Riley is very good with other dogs. He’s pretty mellow and stays mostly to himself. He presently lives with a young male Pitbull/Boxer mix and a female Rottweiler, and does well with both dogs. He might be OK with small dogs, too, as he shows no particular interest in small dogs he sees on walks.

Riley is likely NOT good with cats, as he has shown some level of prey drive when seeing cats while on walks.

Riley is housetrained, but has yet to be left outside of a crate when both of his foster caretakers (Lea & Dustin) are gone. This is to play it safe with the presence of their other dogs in their house. Also, Riley might counter-surf if food is left within reach. Riley is also crated at night.

Riley is a quick learner and is very food-motivated, which make training much easier. He walks great on a loose leash and is non-reactive to other dogs he sees on walks. So far, his off-leash recall from short distances has been pretty good. Click on the following link for Riley’s Instagram page, which includes several videos of him: https://www.instagram.com/goodboi_riley?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

Riley enjoys going for car rides and loads right up with no encouragement needed. He is a calm passenger.

Riley loves to play fetch with balls and to play with stuffed toys. His foster caretakers have yet to bring him to any water bodies, but they bathed him and he didn’t mind the water at all.

We prefer that Riley’s adopter(s) be experienced w/ dogs who have suffered from some level of abuse due to his sensitivity to being handled around his neck and hind quarters. Riley will benefit from continued training and exposure to new environments.

GSRSV rescued Riley from the Sacramento City (“Front Street”) Shelter on August 12. Riley’s current foster caretaker Lea had found Riley roaming the streets of Sacramento while on her way to the Sacramento Intl Airport to fly out for a business trip. Because she was unable to hold on to Riley, she had to bring him to the shelter.

Lea is a real dog-lover and felt terrible about having to surrender Riley to the shelter. She contacted GSRSV to see if I’d rescue Riley if she and Dustin fostered him. I agreed and pulled Riley on August 12, then drove him to Lea & Dustin’s house in Benicia.

Riley is located in Benicia. His adoption fee, which would normally be $250, is being sponsored by his foster caretakers
