Red's Story

Hi, I'm Red, a 58-pound Terrier mix with a heart that's worth taking the time to discover. I'll be honest-meeting new people can be scary for me. I need slow introductions, lots of patience, and plenty of tasty treats to help me realize you're a friend. The best way to win me over is to sit on the floor, let me come to you at my own pace, and never rush me. Because trust doesn't happen overnight, I'll need multiple visits before going home, and everyone who lives in the household will need to meet me along the way. Fast movements, loud noises, or having my boundaries pushed can make me feel overwhelmed, causing me to cower, run away, or become nervous. I'll do best in a calm, predictable home with older family members, so I'm looking for a home with children ages 16 and up who understand that building trust takes time.

Once you earn my trust, though, you'll get to meet the real me-and I promise I'm worth the wait. I transform into the sweetest, silliest boy who can't get enough love! I'll jump up to greet you with happy kisses, roll onto my back for belly rubs, and bounce around with playful energy that will make you smile. I would love an active family that enjoys hiking, relaxing in the sunshine, or taking peaceful walks through the park with me by their side. Deep down, I'm just a big baby who's been missing the consistency and security every dog deserves. What I need most isn't perfection-it's a patient family willing to love me for who I am, celebrate every little milestone, and show me that home is a place where I can finally feel safe, cherished, and loved for the rest of my life.

My adoption fee has been sponsored!

All Pennington County residents must also pay an additional $8 licensing fee at time of adoption.

Humane Society of The Black Hills's Adoption Policy
The adoption process may take up to one hour to complete but we’ll keep it as simple and streamlined as possible. Here are the steps when you’re considering adopting a pet: - Visit our website to see available animals or see them on-site during regular hours, seven days a week. - When you find a dog, cat or small animal you would like to spend more time with, simply call the Humane Society of the Black Hills at (605) 394-4170 for an appointment. - Occasionally, our team is able to accommodate walk-ins, but as we cannot guarantee them, it is best to call for an appointment. -During your scheduled appointment, an adoption advisor will review the animal's history with you and bring the animal to meet you for an initial visit. - A second appointment may be made for you for a variety of reasons (Ex. You have a dog at home you'd like to bring in to meet the pet next). -Once you have met a pet that you think is your perfect match and you have been approved to adopt, your adoption advisor will take you through the adoption process, and you can take your new family member home!
