Ranger's Story

"Ranger" is a magnificent, 95-lb, 3-yo (born 11-28-17) neutered male GSD who is is protective, playful, alert, stubborn and unwaveringly loyal. He is a true “German” GSD, with a plush black/red coat and a slight slope to his rear end. He is AKC-registered with reportedly an excellent pedigree. (Litter Certificate going back three generations available.)

Ranger is initially aloof of strangers, and if on leash will give warning barks. When properly introduced, he is fine. If he’s in a vehicle, he reacts aggressively towards any stranger who approaches. He is an excellent watchdog! Ranger is good with children, having been raised from a puppy in a home with four kids ranging in age from 9-13. He has no food aggression towards people, but will bark off other dogs who approach his food bowl.

Ranger is good with other dogs, but is very much an alpha male so should not be placed in a home w/ another dominant male. When he fights, he fights fiercely and is difficult to call off. Ranger has been living communally with seveal other dogs since February 11 and has done very well. He was the only dog in his former home (from puppy until Sept 2020 and was likely not socialized w/ other dogs. He has come a long way in the month he’s been living with other dogs, and truly enjoys being around them.

Ranger has not lived w/ cats and seems to have a relatively high prey drive, so NO CATS for Ranger.

Ranger is completely housetrained and very mellow inside. He appears to have received some basic training as he does respond to commands such as “sit and stay.” However, he is also stubborn at times and if he does not want to obey a command such as “off the bed”, he will take his time in complying.

Ranger is very good on leash and loves to go for walks. He also has excellent off-leash recall.

Ranger LOVES to go for car rides and is a very polite passenger. He also likes to play fetch.

Ranger was purchased from a breeder by a family in Fair Oaks as a young puppy in early 2018. The family needed to move in late 2020 so listed him for sale on Craiglist. A woman in Elk Grove purchased him in late September 2020. However, Ranger turned out to have far too strong a protective instinct than she was able to handle, so she sought to rehome him. GSRSV took Ranger in on 2-11-21.

Ranger is NOT a dog for the inexperienced GSD owner. He requires a careful balance between firm leadership and a gentle hand. Ranger does not take well to harsh correction.

Ranger is in a foster home near Sacramento. His adoption fee is $260.
