Prince's Story

PRINCE is a 7 year old possible Gordon Setter/Labrador Retriever mix (awaiting DNA confirmation). He is a shorter fellow at just 19” at the shoulder and about 45#. He has a mid-length shiny black coat with tan/brindle muzzle and lower legs.

Prince is just learning about all of the good things in the world like walks in the neighborhood, meeting people, getting treats and learning commands. Once he realized that the world was not SO scary, he has really begun to blossom. He now walks well on leash without pulling too much; he knows the commands Sit, Down, Come, Leave It and he really enjoys the attention of his foster family.

Prince must have had some negative experiences in the past because he can be startled by new things in his environment and he will guard items that he thinks are of high value. He is now learning to release items from his mouth when asked. Special things like chew bones are still difficult for him to share but he is learning to trade them for a treat. Prince reacts negatively to loud voices and being forced to do something quickly. So his training is very positive and fun.

He interacts well with other large dogs in his foster home. He is an active and playful boy and would be happiest with an adult-only family. Prince does have a high prey drive and will leap toward squirrels, rabbits and birds in the yard or on his daily walks. For this reason, he would do best in a home without cats or other small pets.

We are looking for a home that will continue Prince’s confidence-building and training. He is a very fast learner and should do well in a group basic obedience class. Please consider helping Prince become the best dog that he can be. His adoption fee is $350 and he is available in the Illinois, southern Wisconsin, western Indiana, eastern Iowa area.
