Possum's Story
Meet Possum!! (case #8735)

At just 6 months old, Possum the Chihuahua cross is a tiny pup with a big personality waiting to shine. This little guy arrived at the shelter as an unclaimed stray, and like many brave small dogs, he took a couple of days to figure out that the people around him were actually pretty great. Once he decided we were trustworthy? Well… that was it—he started forming some very strong bonds with his favorite humans.

When Possum opens up, you’ll discover a playful, goofy, lively little companion who absolutely adores his people. He’s got a silly streak, a loving heart, and a special talent for lap lounging. His favourite pastime lately has been curling up with staff while they type away at the computer or write assessments—quality cuddle supervision is very important work, after all.

Possum seems to appreciate having a cozy little safe space of his own—a crate, a comfy chair, or a soft bed tucked under a table where he can relax and recharge. Because of his sensitive side, he’ll likely thrive in a calm home that understands that sometimes little dogs like a little den of their own.

Be warned: once Possum loves you, he wants to be right there with you! He’s quick on his feet and has a habit of popping up underfoot hoping for attention, cuddles, or a lift into your lap. Because of his tiny size and enthusiastic shadow-like tendencies, very small children or people with mobility challenges may find this tricky to navigate.

One thing we suspect Possum would absolutely love? A canine buddy! A friendly dog companion—especially one closer to his size—could be a wonderful match for playtime and confidence building.

Right now, Possum has headed off to a foster home where he’s getting some experience living with a cat and children who understand small dogs. We’re excited to share updates as he settles in and shows us even more of his adorable personality.

Possums endearing expression is part of what makes him so special- but also comes with a few considerations that potential adopters should be prepared for. He has a severe overbite which will require monitoring and may lead to dental issues in the future. He also experiences frequent "reverse sneezing" and has limited vision out of his right eye.

If you’re looking for a pint-sized sidekick who will make you laugh, keep your lap warm, and love you with his whole tiny heart, Possum might just be your guy. Possum will be ready for his new home on Saturday March 28th. We will be accepting applications until then and will contact you to make a meet and greet appointment if your application is selected as the best match for him.

Please complete an adoption application at the following link:

https://www.hamilton.ca/home-neighbourhood/animals-pets/adopt-or-foster-pet/adoptions

Animal adoptions and viewing are by appointment only. This allows our Adoption Staff to spend quality time with each potential home to ensure the most successful matches are made between the animals and their new families.

*Please note: we only adopt within Ontario
