Poppy's Story

Meet Poppy A Remarkable Girl with a Heart Full of Joy

Poppy was born around May 2022 and weighs approximately 35 pounds. With her stunning chestnut-colored coat, expressive eyes, and sweet personality, this Shepherd mix is impossible not to love.
Poppy is smart, affectionate, playful, and loves being part of the action. She enjoys wrestling with her canine friends, playing in the yard, attending doggy daycare, and showing off her adorable version of the zoomies. While she may move a little differently than most dogs, she doesn't let that slow her down one bit.

Poppy was born with a congenital hip condition and later suffered an injury that affected her lower spine. Despite these challenges, she lives a happy, active life. She gets around independently in the house and yard and uses her wheelchair for longer outdoor adventures. She can even navigate short flights of stairs on her own.

Because of her spinal injury, Poppy experiences urinary and fecal incontinence and wears washable diapers to manage occasional leaks. She does not require bladder or bowel expression. With a consistent potty schedule, time outside, and regular movement, her daily care is very manageable.

Poppy would thrive in a home where someone is not away for long periods, as she benefits from regular opportunities to go outside. A home with easy access to a yard and minimal stairs would make life even easier for her. She would love a playful canine companion, as she truly enjoys the company of other dogs.
What makes Poppy special isn't her mobility challenges, it's her resilience, joy, and ability to embrace life with her whole heart. She wakes up each day ready to play, love, and make the most of every moment.

To help ensure a smooth transition, Poppy will come with all of her specialized equipment, including her wheelchair, washable diapers, diaper suspenders, waterproof bedding, and dog bed. Her foster family is also committed to helping her adopters learn everything they need to know about her care and will gladly answer questions along the way.

Poppy is living proof that special-needs dogs have extraordinary gifts to offer. All she needs is a family willing to see beyond her differences and recognize the amazing companion she truly is.

If you're looking for a loving, playful, and inspiring best friend, Poppy may be the perfect addition to your family.

Poppy's Wish List: A home with a fenced yard, a family that isn't gone for extended hours, and ideally a playful dog friend to share life's adventures.

The adoption fee of $100 will include spay/neuter, microchip, age appropriate/required vaccinations, treatment for heartworm and any other necessary medical treatment to assure a healthy new pup for your family. IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: Although we do our best to describe breed, since our pups all come from shelters we can not and will not make any guarantee on breed or size. We can tell you that they are 100% RESCUED! And that is the BEST breed!
If you are interested in adopting/meeting , please complete our online adoption application that you can find here: https://www.starfishanimalrescue.com/adopt/dog-adoption-application . Your application will be reviewed by our team and if it is a good fit, we will send to the foster family to set up a meet!

*please note that we are a foster home based rescue and we do home visits as part of the adoption process - we are unable to adopt to families who live outside of the Chicago and surrounding suburbs. Thank you for your understanding.
