Poppy's Story

There's nothing quite like young dog energy and silliness...and then they put their beautiful heads quietly on your shoulder breathing their warm breath. These very loving and sweet young dogs are so pure and vulnerable that it's unbearable to think of them scheduled for euthanasia in a high-kill shelter that has run out of space.

Poppy is a cute as can be 10 month old, 11 lb Chihuahua / Fox Terrier mix. Farfel's doesn't do DNA testing on our rescue dogs, so breeds are an educated guess by New Mexico veterinarians.

Poppy was facing the end of her life before it ever really began. We're very lucky and grateful that Farfel's New Mexico rescuer is compassionate and loving and couldn't turn her back on this very sweet girl with the great temperament..she rescued Poppy just in time to spare her life.

Our wonderful Poppy is undeniably beautiful. Her gorgeous, sleek coat is currently a bit shelter-sad and in need of grooming. Once Poppy is on a regular protocol of excellent nutrition and loving care, her coat will return to the shining cottony softness that her breed mix is known for.

Poppy is appropriately playful and inquisitive for her young age. She's also so loving and cuddly. Our snuggly girl would be very excited to be a couch or bed pup to lie close to her favorite people at the end of an active day. Poppy is also SO smart and engaging once comfortable in her home - very typical of a Chi / Fox Terrier mix.

Since Poppy is just a young girl, she's a blank slate just waiting for a kind and patient human to show her the way. She has all the potential in the world to be an awesome adult companion. Poppy will form firm bonds with her family (as well as other dogs and humans) and learn positive socialization skills through positive reinforcement / force-free Obedience Classes. This is a regimen of training classes that will make a profound difference in a dog's behavior and her relationship with her people. It does take time and commitment...yet pays off a thousand times over when you have a dog that can accompany you out in the world with excellent behavior.

We feel very strongly that every dog deserves the opportunity for formal, positive reinforcement training classes. We therefore aren't willing to adopt Poppy out to a home that doesn't choose to offer her this experience. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of approved virtual and in-person positive reinforcement / force-free trainers in your area.

We're open to Poppy finding her forever home with a retired couple or individual with lots of energy to train and enjoy a silly and super-smart young dog. Poppy seems to enjoy her relationships with both humans and dogs. We would prefer, however, to place her in a home with older kids (tail pulling or rough treatment will create a dog that's fearful of children). Older kids can be active participants in a training regimen and friendship that's so important in both a dog and child's development.

Poppy will be up to date on her vetting / vaccinations to be in line with our commitment to adopting out only healthy dogs. She has also been spayed to support a euthanasia - free future in the canine population

Flower will be arriving on transport in Boulder on Wednesday 2/25/2026 Applications are currently being accepted for this very sweet and loyal best friend. An application can be found at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/. If interested, please fill out completely and submit.

PLEASE NOTE If you're truly interested in adopting Poppy, please be sure to submit our adoption application. It's the only initial tool that we have to determine a great match for this very deserving dog. We're sorry, but in most circumstances, we're unable to get back to those that don't submit an adoption application. Thanks so much for choosing rescue.
