Polard's Story

Polard, born 01-07-21, weighing 10 pounds, arrived to Mattie's Place in March 2026, after a stay at a Canadians shelter.

Polard's person needed the shelter support as a safe space for Polard while they managed some personal things in life, but sadly, they never returned for Polard, so after months of trying to reconnect Polard with his person, he was transferred to Mattie's Place.

Polard did great in foster care for 2.5 months, and his only "behaviour" concerns was some separation anxiety, which greatly improved in foster care and he was adopted in May 2026.

Unfortunately, Polard's adopters had some really huge life changes with work & medical shortly after adoption and Polard began to buckle under the pressure his people were feeling daily and in turn, he began to exhibit some unwelcoming behaviour -- reactivity to dogs & people on walks and in the home. He remained loyal and dedicated to his adopters, but anyone outside of that circle he felt he needed to "step up" and protect his people. A role a dog should never feel they need to take on - but Pomeranians are extremely loyal, dedicated, all-in companions and with his people under immense stress, he stepped up.

Though I HIGHLY recommend new adopters begin training with all adopted dogs, to set everyone up for success and help manage bonds, that didn't happen with Polard and his adopters with other life pressing events happening, so Polard continued to decline in behaviour and also began having tummy troubles and loose stools.

Though the adopters had the best of intentions, Polard honestly unravelled really quickly in their care over 3 months and in September, they opted to return him to Mattie's Place and I welcomed him back happily.

Relieved I could help this sweet, little guy get back on track, I sent him straight to a trainer, who he has lived with since arrival back into rescue care - Collected Canines.

Being back in a stable environment, Polard had the weight of the world removed from him and he reverted back into the good boy Pomeranian Mattie's Place has always known him to be while in foster care.

His separation anxiety is non-existent. His reactivity is gone. Though he's still a little shy and uncertain with new people and can be vocal, he's not a threat at all and it doesn't take him long to sort his emotions out and welcome new human friends in his space. At Mattie's Place, we're okay with dogs expressing their emotions through vocalization, as long as they rein it in, in a reasonable amount of time.

He's poops have been terrific without any stress poop happening further.

He is besties with all the dogs he meets on walks and in the training centre and is really just the great little guy we originally welcomed to Mattie's Place in March.

It will be VERY important that Polard's next adopter is his final stop and he's in a dedicated home for the rest of his life. It's unfortunate he's had to shuffle around in his life, but here we are and we'll get it right this time for him.

- A family that has Pomeranian experience

- A family that will 100% jump into professional training post adoption to gain the professional support needed as Polard transitions into his new life with you and you both create healthy bonds as well as boundaries.

- A family with another dog, ideally a Pomeranian, as Polard really is dog social and friendly and he'll do great having a buddy to play with.

- A family dedicated to supporting Polard, no matter what life throws their way and willing to dig in really deep to work through the ups and downs that always come with dog ownership.

Polard is coming due for a dental cleaning in 2027, so I will ensure he has that completed, at our veterinarian, at the cost of Mattie's Place post adoption, once he's settled in with his new family.

Polard is microchipped to Mattie's Place

Polard does have a Trupanion pet insurance policy that I expect an adopter to continue with: Total Monthly Premium $81.83

Polard's current deductible per illness is: $2,000
Maximum Lifetime Benefits Payment: No Limit
Co-Insurance Percentage (Trupanion/Owner) 90% / 10%

Additional Endorsements/Riders Included With Your Policy:
Recovery and complementary care:
Rehabilitative therapy
Acupuncture
Hydrotherapy
Chiropractic
Behavioral modification
Homeopathy
Naturopathy

FROM THE TRAINER THAT HE LIVES WITH:

Polard is the spunky companion we all need in our life! He has the sweetest smile that makes you think a dog can’t possibly be that happy all the time.. but he truly is.

He can be sensitive to touch, especially with those he’s just getting to know but once he’s “your guy” good luck getting him to stop giving you kisses. He has done very well with everyone he’s met if there is no pressure applied and he has time to check them out on his own, this includes my young children ages 1 year & 4 years.

Polard can be very vocal when first meeting new people but with some guidance he’s done very well at reining it in quickly. When he does play with other dogs he’s also very vocal which may be perceived incorrectly as "reactivity". He’s met many dogs of all different temperaments and sizes and been awesome with them all.

His absolute favourite thing is to work his basic obedience for his special “egg” snack in the morning. If you’re not fast enough he resorts to happy yips and showing you how fast he can spin (sometimes he will even parkour off your leg).

Although he’s little he’s always up for our daily trips to the farm to hike with his dog pals, never running out of energy. He would be an awesome dog for someone who wants a trick dog !!

He’s done very well in his crate and sleeps through the night without a peep. He can get whiney if he does see you so covering his crate is ideal. When let to free roam he just explores and ultimately makes good choices always coming back to check what you’re up to.

Polard is somewhat of a grazer with his food, taking his time (with his kibble), however watch out for YOUR food because it’s a lot yummier and he doesn’t mind helping himself to it.

We normally start our day between 6-7 AM and last potty is typically 10-11 PM.

He walks beautifully with a slip lead, and although has previously been deemed reactive, with the proper guidance he walks past distractions like a champ.

He is a very special guy and has so much love to give. Whoever gets to adopt him will have so much fun ahead of them.

---------------------------------------

$875 ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leashcollar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.

----------------------------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in it's current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.

----------------------------------------

Mattie's Place does not deem any dog in our care hypoallergenic, allergy-free or non-allergenic. Unless you are willing to take daily medication to manage dog allergies, please do not apply to adopt because I can't risk a dog being returned due to allergic reactions.
