Poe's Story

Age 1 year
Weight 39 pounds

Meet our lovable American Staffordshire terrier*, Poe (as in Edgar Allan)! Poor Poe, abandoned to the streets of his native Baltimore and then to a kill shelter. He got a lucky break and ended up at Small Miracles and is now in a foster home with two foster parents and three foster siblings (dogs). He even had an opportunity to spend a long weekend with his foster Grandparents (both 85 years old). He gets along great with all the other dogs. He loves to play and he takes to training well (all his mixes are known for their trainability). On any given day if he had his druthers, he would simply sit on your lap for cuddles. If he cannot sit on your lap, he will follow you around the house in hopes of play time or additional petting. He is great with household tasks and specializes in those tasks that require zero dogs. He is the world’s most friendly dog who loves to spend time with his people (that’s you by the way). This sweet pup would be a wonderful companion for families of all ages, ready to fill your days with warmth and joy. Come meet your new best friend!

Poe is house broken; he is both paper and bell trained. He rings the bell (most of the time) when he needs to go out and is equally content to use his papers in the corner. (We had to paper train him post-surgery because he could not go out in the icy weather – more below.) The combination training would make him well suited for a family that works or a family that has limited outdoor space. He knows sit, down, and stay (for short periods). As you can see in his videos, he walks beautifully on a leash and is the perfect lap dog for snuggling.

A car hit Poe when he was living on the streets. The impact destroyed his back hip socket. Small Miracles was able to raise enough money to have his hip repaired and he is now ready for adoption. Post surgery, he could not go outside because of the unending days of ice, so we added paper training to his list of tricks and capabilities. (If you are interested, we can give all the details, and a vet report will come with adoption.) He is still a bit gimpy but that will get better, quickly, over time.

The Staffordshire Terrier (Staffy) is a muscular, agile, and affectionate dog from England, known for its gentle nature with families, earning it the nickname "nanny dog" due to its love for children. They have a short, sleek coat, a stocky build, and a characteristic "grin," and are loyal, playful, and courageous companions. Poe is an exemplar of these traits. We have found him kind, gentle, active, and loving.

*49% Staffordshire Terrier; 29% American Pitbull; 8% Boxer; 8% Australian Cattle Dog; 2% Bulldog. DNA test results available.

Poe is in foster care, so if you would like to meet and hopefully adopt him, please submit an application via email: smpetfinder@gmail.com.
https://smallmiraclesrescue.org/adopt.shtml

HOW TO ADOPT:

THIS dog is NOT in the shelter. For dogs in foster care, you MUST submit an application via EMAIL to smpetfinder@gmail.com. Please note in the email subject which dog you are interested in.

Go to: http://www.smallmiraclesrescue.org
and click "How to Adopt". There you will find the dog application available for download.

The more information you provide, the faster the process is for all of us. Once you are approved to adopt, we will schedule an appointment to see the puppy in person and you will adopt and take it home that day.

Due to the (usual) speed and ease of our adoption process, PLEASE ONLY APPLY IF YOU ARE READY TO ADOPT RIGHT NOW. If you are not ready to adopt within the next couple of days, we totally understand - just wait to apply until you are ready.

Adoption Fees:

Before our dogs are available for adoption, they will always be spayed/neutered, vaccinated (Distemper, Parvovirus, Bordetella, Rabies as much as age-appropriate), stool sample checked for parasites, and dewormed.

Adoption fee for our dogs is $375, $40 for a microchip and registration and $50 for a 6 month supply of heartworm preventative.
