My name is Pico, and I'm a three-year-old Terrier/American Staffordshire mix weighing about 38 pounds. I'm looking for a very special forever home with someone who understands that I have some unique needs. I'm a proud distemper survivor, I'm up to date on my vaccines, and I take Clomipramine and Xanax to help manage my anxiety, along with NexGard Plus for flea and tick prevention. I also have some vision impairment, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying life!

If you're looking for a dog who will adore you with her whole heart, I just might be your girl. I'm incredibly affectionate, love to cuddle, and once I trust you, I'll happily become your loyal little shadow. My favorite place is right by my person's side, and I form incredibly strong bonds with the people I love.

Because I experience severe anxiety and fear, I need a patient, experienced owner who understands reactive dogs. New people, unfamiliar sounds, and unexpected movement can be overwhelming for me, and I often respond by barking or reacting out of fear. While I'm happiest and most relaxed inside my home with my trusted person, I don't generally become comfortable with visitors and will likely always be cautious around people outside my immediate family.

Walks can also be challenging for me. I enjoy getting outside, but loud sounds, crowds of people or traffic, or seeing unfamiliar dogs or people up close makes me very anxious. I can react aggressively when I'm deeply frightened. However, I have been improving, and have been going on solo and group dog walks successfully while at TAP HQ. My new family should be prepared to continue helping me with my anxieties and help me feel safe.

At home, I'm potty-trained and can stay home alone for several hours once I've settled into a routine with my person. During the adjustment period, though, my anxiety may cause me to scratch doors or become destructive. Crates are not a good option for me because they increase my anxiety.

Because of my fear-based reactivity, I need to be the only pet in the home. I have shown aggression toward other dogs, especially while on leash, and I have not been tested with cats. Although I've generally done well around children in the past, I've recently begun nipping the youngest child in my current home when competing for attention. For that reason, I would do best in an adult-only home or possibly a home with older, dog-savvy teens.

My dream home is a quiet one with a securely fenced yard where I can safely enjoy the outdoors without the stress of frequent walks. I'd love someone who spends a lot of time at home and is committed to helping me feel safe, understood, and loved. I'm looking for an experienced, patient person who will celebrate my small victories and appreciate the incredible bond we can build together.

If you're willing to invest your heart in me, I'll reward you with unwavering loyalty, endless cuddles, and the kind of devotion only a true Velcro dog can give. I'm searching for someone who sees past my fears and recognizes the sweet, loving girl underneath.

My adoption fee includes spaying/neutering, shots, and microchip. If you want to take me home, please fill out the application form on the website.

The Animal Pad's Adoption Policy
We prioritize local San Diego applicants. We do not provide transport of dogs to other states, and don't allow the dogs to fly in the cargo of the plane. Our adoption process from start to finish, involves 3 standard forms, and 2 situational. All potential applicants must be capable of providing their adopted pet with routine and emergency veterinary care (yearly health checks, keeping vaccinations current, heartworm/flea preventatives, and immediate care in the event the animal is sick or injured). They are required to license their pet, and keep an identification tag on their pet at all times. All applicants must agree to a home check, and provide us with a veterinary reference, or personal references if you're a first-time pet owner. Our home checks are not to invade the privacy of the applicants, we do this to ensure the pet is going into a safe home. We do not discriminate against non-homeowners, or those living in apartments, condos, or otherwise. Our adoption fees vary from $150-1000. Applicants must agree in writing that if for any reason they are unable to keep or care for their pet, the pet will be surrendered back to our rescue and not re-homed, turned over to a shelter, pound, rescue, new owner, sold, etc. Adoption Application: https://theanimalpad.org/adoption-application/
