Phantom's Story

Age: 4-6 years old

What kind of personality do you have?
I am shy, but goofy too when given a chance to warm up. I seem sad and afraid, but once you get to know me you will learn that I am a careful thinker and am funny. I am happiest with a dog best friend. I am introverted, but if I am with another dog my extrovert side will show especially if we are playing outside. I don’t like loud and rambunctious people; they overwhelm me.

I am very quiet in my crate and don’t ever bark. When my foster mom has friends over they all say they don’t believe there is a dog in the house because I am that quiet if I am crated.

When I am out of my crate I like to hangout on my bed in the living room or the kitchen. I will just chill. I am not crazy and do not jump on furniture or play with toys. I am a quiet dog but I promise to keep you entertained! Sometimes I pace, but I am working on not doing that.

What is your love language?
My love language is words of affirmation. I need my human to let me know that situations are okay and assure me that I am brave and safe.

What do you like to eat?
I love my dog food and most of the treats my foster mom gives me. I LOVE hotdogs and deli meat; that’s usually the only thing I will eat from my foster moms hands.

What is your favorite toy?
Toys scare me and I am not sure what to do with them. When they squeak I get very concerned. Sometimes, if I am playing with another dog, I will pick up a stick and throw that around. I like stuffed bones and kongs and get those when I am in my crate. I have tried to chew a bone before but that doesn’t last very long.

Do you know any tricks?
My favorite trick is “touch”. When someone puts their hand out I like to boop it with my nose. It helps me feel confident. I am working on other tricks. Sitting scares me because I like to always be on all four feet, ya know, just in case anything scary happens around me like the floor creaks or something. I gotta be ready to get away.

What scares you?
A better question is what doesn’t scare me? The only answer would be dogs. I love dogs; everything else scares me especially if it is new.
Once I get used to something I am not as scared but things like new noises, new people, the ice machine making ice, or even the dryer when it clanks- it all freaks me out. If you throw my routine off that sometimes scares me too.
When I am scared I like to be in a safe place like my bed or my crate. I need my foster mom to help me work through my fear and show me that things are okay. She keeps me on a leash 24/7 so she can hold it in case I get scared. It prevents me from running away and shows me that everything is okay.

Do you like cats?
Cats scare me. I met two of them and I avoided even making eye contact- they are FREAKY. I tried to pretend they weren’t there, but one swatted at my nose. I ran and hid behind my foster mom until she let me leave. I think I would do okay in a home with a cat.

Do you have any doggie best friends?
There isn’t a dog I haven’t met that I don’t love, especially females. Sometimes I get a little too rambunctious, but if you say my name I listen and calm down right away. If I am getting a little to crazy, I take corrections nicely. I still am learning to play and need dogs who help me. I would like to go to a home with another dog.

Who do you live with in your foster home and who is your closest companion?
I live with my foster mom, Jamie. It’s just me and her. When her friends come over, I like to investigate by watching from afar. Female humans scare me more than male humans. I warm up pretty quickly to males, but it takes me a few visits for me to warm up to females.

Describe your perfect day:
My perfect day would be going on a long hike with my forever family and then coming home and laying on my dog bed while we watch a movie. I love hiking and feel confident when I am on walks. I can hike alone or with dog friends.

How is your health?
I am in good health. I have to get an allergy shot every 6-8 weeks to help my skin otherwise it’ll get itchy. I also have had a few UTIs when I came to Even Chance and am currently on medication for crystals in my urine (August 2022). Once I have completed my medication my foster mom thinks I will be back to great health again.

Where do you hang out when you are home alone?
I love my crate. My mom works two jobs so I am used to being home alone. I sleep when I am at home by myself. I don’t tear up blankets or destroy my crate. I am very peaceful and just hang out.

Where do you sleep?
I sleep in my crate. My crate is my safe place. My mom had me sleep on her bed a few times; I stayed frozen all night and didn’t move. I want to like it, but it’s a change in my routine and is different than my crate, so it throws me off. My mom has also let me sleep in my dog bed in our living room. I have done this a few times and I really like it.

What was life like before you were rescued by Even Chance and brought into the welcoming arms of your foster parents?
My life was completely different before Even Chance. I was one of about ninety dogs rescued from a dog fighting bust in New York. The ASPCA took me in and the nice people there are the reason I got my even chance at life. The ASPCA worked with Even Chance who came and brought me to my foster home at the end of November, 2021. I was a little freaked out about living in a home… so I made a breakaway out of an open window on a warm December day. I slipped out of my crate when Jamie was closing it, jumped into the screen which I broke and took off. Jamie chased out the window after me, but I was way too fast for her. She trapped me in a horse pen where I played with the horses for a while, but I got bored and took off running again. I explored St. Louis for almost a full week and man it was COLD. Thanks to the wonderful community I was found and saved by my dog friend Solo and her mom Jessi. Not gonna lie, I don’t want to run away again, but if my brain goes into flight mode I will try to get away. I don’t want to, it is just my instinct. I am learning to trust. I will need a family that understands this and keeps an eye on me at all times. When doors are opened and people are coming in or out I need to be on a tie out or locked safely in my crate.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even Chance does not operate on a first come, first serve basis. In most cases we have already decided the type of home and owner we want for our dogs. These opinions are based on the temperament tests we perform prior to accepting the dog into our program and the behaviors the dogs display as they grow up. Our agency reserves the right to deny acceptance of any dog to an owner who we feel the lifestyle does not match that of the dog. We are in no way judging you or your lifestyle; we simply want to put our dogs in the best living situation possible. We take very seriously the decision we make when it comes to placing one of our dogs in a forever home. If I sound like the perfect pit bull for your and your family and you are interested in giving me a forever home, do not hesitate! Please fill out an application here and my foster family will contact you to schedule an in-person meet and greet. We look forward to meeting any and all interested applicants.
