Petunia Holly's Story

When we first met Petunia, she was 1 day out from giving birth to ten puppies. We had received a desperate cry for help from kindhearted people who had assumed care of this heavily pregnant dog. Thankfully, we were able to get her straight into a foster home where she safely and lovingly raised her motley crew of 10.

Abandoned when her previous family was evicted, it's impossible to miss that Petunia has not had the easiest life. It's written all over her mournful eyes, the way that she flinches when you raise a hand, the way that she's terrified of strangers (but still opens her heart each and every time), the way that she prefers children and is nervous around men.

We know that prior to being cared for by the neighbors, Petunia was wandering outside fulltime. From watching her companion dogs get hit by cars to raising the puppies of those same dogs to losing her first litter, we can't imagine all of the other ways she suffered.

All of that is over now. Petunia's new chapter began on December 18th when she had to be gently scooted through the doors of our shelter and down the hall.

Now that Petunia has been back with us for the past few weeks, there's not a staff member that hasn't pledged their life, love, and loyalty to her. Once you gain her trust, you are greeted by the gentlest of tail wags and rewarded by 5-10 seconds of zoomies outside.

At her core, this 75 lb brindle beauty is the ultimate couch potato. Spending 99% of her time perched on the couch in the office (her preferred option - she likes to be around people) or the couch in the groom room which has become her temporary encampment, she snores her days away. She's partial to a good treat or three, and she enjoys her walks and her brief periods of outside playtime.

Her idea of a good time is her preferred human joining her on the couch so she can ooze her way over to your lap, melt across you, and assume duty as world's first live weighted blanket. Petunia has a shining future as devoted bed warmer and enthusiastic cuddler.

Per her foster home, Petunia loves cats, is fine with other dogs, adores children, and would rather explode than have a potty accident inside. She walks great on a leash and at least around here, is non-destructive.

We are searching for a family for her that has as much patience as they do love, who understands that a dog decompressing from a lifetime of hurt and trauma as well as time spent at the shelter is a gradual process that spans days, weeks, months, and even years.
