Pepper (fka Glimmer)'s Story
ABOUT PEPPER
Add a little spice to your life, meet Pepper! This beautiful baby is a 5-year-old deaf pittie. Pepper originally came to HAP a few years ago, as a puppy named Glimmer. She was swiftly adopted and enjoyed the lat 4 years in a home. When her family welcomed a baby, Pepper adjusted well at first. However, once the child became a busy toddler, she began to startle easily since she couldn't hear when the child was nearby. Because Pepper is deaf, it can be difficult for her to navigate the unpredictable movements and sounds of very young children. With this in mind, her family made the difficult decision to return her to us so she could find a home better suited to her needs.

In her previous home, Pepper was leash-trained, house-trained, and crate-trained. She also learned hand signals for her commands, and our staff would be happy to show you how she communicates when you come to visit! Pepper is a higher-energy gal who loves to sniff, explore, and stay busy. Our kennel staff lovingly refer to her as a "stocky little cannonball," because once she gets excited, the zoomies really kick in! Even though she can't hear them, Pepper absolutely loves squeaky toys and will happily toss them around to entertain herself. Like many deaf dogs, Pepper can startle easily if she's asleep or doesn't see you approaching. Due to this, she would do best in a calm, predictable home environment where her people understand her needs. That said, Pepper has never harmed anyone when she's frightened, she typically just barks until she realizes everything is okay!

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.
