PEPPER's Story

A special plea for a very special girl….

As volunteers for the Humane Society, we see all kinds of stories cross our paths. Some are great, and some are sad. Some fade with time, and some keep us awake at night. That’s exactly why we want to introduce a very special friend that we call Pepper.

Pepper’s story started long before we met her, but we would like to share what we do know about her.

A little over a year ago, we were called to help in a situation that involved a dog and some puppies. They thought they had been dumped, and it was very cold outside. These poor dogs didn’t have any shelter. They couldn’t survive without someone intervening on their behalf.

When we arrived to where Pepper and her puppies were staying, we noticed that her pups were several months old. They all were so hungry. The only shelter they had was under the porch of a kind person that wanted more for them. They woke up every day trying to survive on scraps and suffer the cold with no shelter.

Once we got them to the shelter, we noticed that they needed vet care and lots of love. Pepper was so terrified to be forced into another new place through no fault of her own. She wouldn’t even come out of her dog house for several days.

She had spent so much of her life in survival mode that she started to shut down. After some time and lots of love, finally, she began to slowly trust us. That’s when we started to see a very special personality in her.

We learned that she needs to be the only dog. She does not like any animals in her space. That space is for humans. She loves all people and kids but needs time to warm up. She does not do well at adoption events unless she already knows the volunteers. She needs a day or so to let you in her space and in her heart. But once you are there, she never forgets. She is house trained and because she has zero anxiety when you are gone, she does not need a crate. She is not an escape artist. She would rather be with you. She is an awesome car rider and if you travel a lot for work, she would be great. We ask you give her a chance. Don't let first impressions dominate your decision.
