Penny - Long Coat - Needs To Be An Only Dog's Story
This dog is being fostered in Dallas TX and must be adopted within the Dallas or the North Central Texas area.

NAME: Penny
GENDER: Female (Spayed)
AGE: About 2 years
WEIGHT: About 9 pounds
DOGS/CATS: Gets along with other dogs of all sizes/cats unknown
CHILDREN: Recommend an Adult Only Home
COAT: Long Coat

Meet one of our newest CRT fosters – Penny. The name Penny is derived from the Greek name Penelope, known for her loyalty. This is a perfect name for this sweet girl because she is very loyal and loving. And her copper colored reddish coat – well, she definitely looks like a penny!

Penny has had quite the journey over the last 12 months. She was originally found as a stray in Ft Worth and found herself in the shelter. After her stray hold was over, she was adopted from the shelter, then rehomed to another family. They were working 10-12 hour days and crating her that entire time. They realized this was not the best life for her, and reached out to CRT to ask if we would put her into our program. We are happy to have her in a stable CRT foster home where she can relax, grow and become the amazing dog that she was meant to be.

When Penny meets new people, she is slow and cautious. If you are patient with her, she will warm up. But it has to be at her pace. You can see it in her eyes that she WANTS to trust you but just doesn’t know if she should. We have introduced her to numerous new people. With some of those people, she will let them pet her fairly quickly but with others she is more wary and will give a warning snap to let them know to slow down. Penny will happily walk among strangers that visit her home, and even gently take treats out of their hand while being just a little cautious. For some reason, Penny wants to know you before she takes that final leap of faith and lets you pet her. We don’t know her history so we can only speculate. Our hearts hurt for her because of this. She is such a good dog, and just wants time to build trust. That is a fair request.

Penny is also a resource guarder. This can be her humans or with food. Sometimes toys but she often plays tug o war as long as she gets the toy in the end! When Penny is on the couch she will not let any other dog join her and her human. She will charge them and growl. To deal with this we have been using a squirt water bottle and also putting her down off the couch when she does that. If she is the last dog on the couch she is fine with the dogs that are already there. She really wants to be a good girl but she needs stability and a pack leader who won’t let her run them over when she gets snarky.

And once Penny knows she is safe with you, she relaxes and loves you. Penny loves her foster family. Penny spends her days happily bouncing around her foster home. She walks with her tail up and wagging all the time. Her favorite thing is sitting on the couch with her foster family watching TV. Her foster family says she literally melts in their arms and shares her love with them. Penny’s improvement from the day we got her until now has been remarkable. And we know with the right family, she will continue down this path. Someday Penny will trust everyone but it will take time. With the right family, and a little patience this girl will make a wonderful loving companion.

Penny needs an active human that will take her for walks and get her social skills up to speed. She has energy to burn, but not over the top. She loves toys and will play with them as well as the younger dogs in her foster home. Her favorites are the squeaky toys. She also loves to run in the yard and bark at squirrels or anything else that might be catching her attention.

Penny is smart. She has learned commands such as “sit”, “stay” and “down”. She takes direction and correction well. At night, Penny sleeps quietly in her crate.

Penny is a long coat Chihuahua and she is gorgeous. Penny is about 2 years old. She weighs about 9 pounds. CRT did have a complete dental done on Penny so her teeth are white and pretty.

The perfect home for Penny would be one where the parents (or parent) is an experienced owner. We recommend an adult only home. She does react (bark) when she hears noise she is not familiar with, but settles down fairly quickly. We do not think she would do well in an apartment environment. With a little patience she will make a wonderful companion. She is the sweetest girl, and just wants to be cuddled and loved.

Penny is being fostered in the Dallas-Fort Worth (Texas) area. Our CRT adoption form can be found at: http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/ Note: it works best when our application is filled out on a computer versus a phone or tablet. When the application submits correctly, the system will send you a copy. If you do not receive a copy into your email que, it did not submit. Feel free to email us at DFWCoordinator@chihuahua-rescue.com if you need help with the application.

Penny is spayed, microchipped, up to date on shots, heartworm negative and on heartworm prevention. She is ready for adoption.

This dog is a CRT rescue. Reference checks, adoption contract and $300.00 adoption donation required.

As part of our mission to reduce the number of unwanted and sick dogs, we require that all current pets are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and taking heart worm prevention. Applications will not be considered if one or more of these requirements are not met.

After filling out an adoption application (found at http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/), please email DFWCoordinator@chihuahua-rescue.com if you are interested in this dog.
