Penny's Story

Penny is 7 yrs old and weighed 11lbs when she first arrived in our rescue's foster care. However, based on her youthful looks, her level of energy, her clear sparkling black eyes and pearly white teeth, we estimate her to be somewhat younger, likely more around 5 years of age. Penny, along with 20 other small dogs, was confiscated by authorities from a dire hoarding situation where they were confined to an extremely filthy basement and all were extremely underweight: Penny only weighed 7 lbs when she first arrived at the US shelter.

She is so cute and elegant with her square compact body and her long muscular legs which give her great mobility. Penny’s blond coat has the added benefit of being very low shed. She has stunning big, bright and shiny dark eyes that are amplified by her surrounding light cream coloured mask. She is a real cute doll! A healthy little dog, who loves food and is very alert. Her favourite occupation is to watch her foster mom potter around the kitchen, patiently and quietly sitting close by or keeping an interested watchful eye on her while lying down in her kitchen day bed. Penny entertains herself gnawing on raw hide for long periods of time. Every now and then, she goes to her foster mom for a quick petting and gives her kisses in return. Then, she happily goes back tail wagging to her bed, and keeps watching the love of her life. Penny is exclusive and devotes all of her love to her caregiver. She bonds very tightly and is extremely trusting towards her number one human. She turns over for belly rubs, lets her handle and touch any body parts including her paws, ears, mouth. She does not display any aggression towards other humans, she is just shy and polite. She likes to sit on her foster mom’s lap for a short while or near her on the sofa. She is smart, inquisitive, interested in everything her favourite person does, which makes her a great, very present companion. She is a bit wary of men but forgets her fear if offered a treat! She is extremely food motivated. She likes other dogs, even large size dogs do not scare her and is definitely more confident in other canines' presence. She is a follower, not a leader. She patiently waits for her turn to get a treat but she will not happily share her food bowl or chewing bone with other dogs and will silently curl her upper lip to let it known.
Penny is working on her leash walking skills and doing well. She has the cutest, funny antics, such as twirling on herself and doing a welcoming dance when her foster mom returns home or when she prepares her food bowl. She has sudden daily outbursts of passionate kissing after dinner.

Penny is pee pad trained and well housebroken, relieves herself on peepad and also outdoors. She can also be given the run of the house as she is not destructive at all.
Penny will alert and bark when someone is at the door. When she first arrived in our foster care, any noise would often trigger a bark, but she pretty much has this under control by now.
This little gal is a true gem, such a pleasure to have around because she provides steady, ever-present company to her caregiver without being overly demanding of attention.

Ideal adoptive candidate (s) for this little waggy tail cutie: female single or female couple, or both gender couple with a male partner who does not mind being second fiddle ;-)
Patient adopters who understand that, in time, Penny will surely give her heart again and are willing to give her the time for this to happen.
Are you this special person Penny has been long waiting for?
