She’s not for the faint of heart — but for the right person, she will be an incredibly loyal, loving companion. 🐾 <br/><br/>Penny is a cuddle-all-day kind of girl once you’re her person. She enjoys snoozing, cozy spots, and the occasional zoomie burst when the mood strikes. She’s food motivated (which will be helpful for training!) and when she bonds with you, she bonds hard. Her foster says she absolutely adores her husband and has a clear soft spot for men — she tends to gravitate toward male humans and even male dogs. And when Penny loves you, she LOVES you. 💕 <br/><br/>She will happily curl up pressed against your side, soak up all the affection, and look at you like you are her entire world. With her chosen people, she is incredibly sweet, deeply devoted, and surprisingly tender. She wants to be close, she wants to feel safe, and she gives her whole little heart when she trusts you. But let’s talk about the spice 🌶️ <br/><br/>Penny is protective of her people and her food. She is very particular about handling — if someone reaches for her too quickly or tries to handle her when she’s not comfortable, she will nip to advocate for herself. Because of this, Penny is looking for an experienced, chihuahua-savvy home that understands resource guarding, boundaries, and how to build trust properly. 🐾 <br/><br/>She will need: *An adult-only home (no children). *A confident, experienced handler. *Slow introductions to new people. *Continued positive reinforcement training. *Patience and consistency as she learns leash skills and house training. 🐾 <br/><br/>She is currently very fearful of the leash and will need someone committed to gently working through that at her pace. She is free roaming in foster and settles quietly when left alone. She does well with other dogs and cats, though any resident dog should be tolerant and confident — someone who won’t escalate if Penny gets a little bossy or protective. That said, she may also thrive as the only dog where she doesn’t feel the need to guard her person. 🐾 <br/><br/>We truly believe Penny has experienced trauma in her past. She needs someone who sees beyond the spice and understands that her big reactions come from a place of fear and insecurity. Underneath it all is a deeply loving, loyal little dog who just wants to feel safe. 🐾 <br/><br/>Penny isn’t a “beginner dog.” She’s a relationship dog.
