Penelope's Story

Penelope is so discerning she was used at the shelter to temperament test other dogs. She has the unique ability to correctly read other dogs, and she instinctively knows to to avoid and who to interact with. She is able to sit quietly next to her trainer and deflect when other dogs act like idiots.

Penelope is great with male and female dogs. One of her best friends in the prison program is Sawyer, who looks very much like her, they could be twins.

Penelope is very smart, visually attentive watching you closely for your expression, body language and directives. She is crate trained, and really enjoys her crate where she gets all her chew bones and special toys. She does not disturb her trainers' belongings in the cell and she is quiet unless someone peeks in their window. Then she will give her trainers the "someone's at the door" bark. Anyone invited into the cell is Penelope's friend.

Penelope enjoys being near her people and receiving belly rubs and scratches behind her ears. Playing fetch in the play yard is great fun because it includes her favorite two people.

Penelope loves to learn new things. She aces all the mental games we give her but mostly she loves interacting with people she trusts. Yes, there are inmates she avoids, but, well they are the ones we avoid too, so she is a very intuitive and wise girl!

Riverbend Jail Dog Program's Adoption Policy
Dogs in our program live and train with prison inmates. Meet and greets are scheduled only for approved adopters, and are conducted away from the prison. Potential adopters are approved through a review of their adoption application. We ask that all human family members and other dogs living in the home come to the meet and greet. We do not adopt our dogs into homes with children under 4 years of age. Children ages 4-8 are considered on a case-by-case basis. Cat tests can be done upon request from approved adopters. Home checks are conducted at the time our dogs are delivered to their forever home by the program instructor.
