Penelope's Story
Why Choose Me?

Foster update: Penelope is still waiting for her forever home! Her foster sent us this update:

"An Athenspets volunteer once described Penelope as a gentle giant. She is absolutely right! She is a big girl (88 lbs), but SO sweet, gentle, calm, and easy going. She is house trained and crate trained although she doesn't need to be crated. She is 8 years old, aging like fine wine and still got that sparkle.

She gets along with both male and female dogs. She met a family with two small children at Ben Burton Park one day. She sat still (I didn't even ask her to!) so that they could pet her, and when they did, she just melted in their arms. She ADORES children.

She enjoys car rides, short walks, and sunbathing in the yard. Her former owner reported that she had separation anxiety, but I'm not sure if she does. I left her alone one time for 4 1/2 hours and she was snoozing peacefully when I peeked in at the two-hour and the four-hour mark. I didn't see a puddle of drool at the crate door, torn blankets or anything that made me think she struggled being left alone. She doesn't do well with cats and doesn't like fireworks, but she is by far the easiest foster I've ever had."

Doggy-Day-Out update: Anyone looking to save an 8 yr old senior dog from the shelter? Penelope is a staff and volunteer favorite, who only has a few days left.
She visited us for a couple hours recently and was a dream. Perfect house manners and even waited for permission to walk inside. Good recall, indifferent to our parakeets, and willingly napped in an XL crate while we were home with her. If interested, please read below...

Penelope is URGENT and needs a foster home where we can learn more about her or a forever home where she can live out her days in comfort.
She is a calm low energy girl who rides well in the car, enjoys short leash walks, couch naps, patio naps and attending class at UGA. She tested well with male and female dogs but cannot be in a home with cats.

Her former owner reported separation anxiety but we need more information so we can find perfect placement. She may do best in a home with another dog and/or with a person who works from home or leaves for short periods of time. If your work allows dog companions then Penelope is your girl.

Doggy-Day-Out update: "She is very easy. I would say that she is a gentle giant. She didn't pull on the leash and she was just enjoying sniffing everything she could. She was content with our walk and she loved the car ride. Every so often she would lay down on the seat, almost curl up, but then she'd be right back up sticking her head out the window. She never barked and really just minded her own business. I think she'd make a wonderful dog for a family looking for a sweet, laid back dog."
* * *
Update: Penelope always appreciates basking in the sun and having time with a friend. I had to leave the interaction pen for a few minutes, and when I came back, she was standing at the gate waiting for my return. When I opened the gate, she did a happy dance and then ran back to the blanket for more sun and love. I adore Penelope. She's easy to be with, already house trained, and good with other dogs. How I wish she finds a forever home.

Penelope is a sweet 9-year-old senior. She likes being with friends, going for short walks, and enjoying a few treats. The person that brought her to the shelter said she also likes being a lap dog and getting in the water. She lived as an indoor dog, is house trained, does well with kids of all ages, and likes other dogs but not cats. Penelope doesn't like being left alone for more than two hours and will get out of a crate if left longer than that. She needs a heavy-duty crate, but what she'd REALLY like is living with someone who is home most of the time. She went to doggy daycare but wasn't a fan. Her collar has the word LOVE in the design, and that's what she is-a gentle, loving girl. I hope she finds the right home for her through her golden years.

You can read more about this dog and check out additional photos here: https://www.accgov.com/9482/Dogs

The adoption fees, shelter schedule, a description of the rescue and adoption process, and a list of included vetting can be found at https://athenspets.net/adoption-rescue-process.

This dog is available for adoption through Athens-Clarke County Animal Services, located at 125 Buddy Christian Way, Athens, GA.
