Paulding's Story
Name: Paulding
Male or female? Male
Approximate Age: 7
Breed: Short Retreiver mix
Weight: 40 lb
Any impairments: Sight
Potty trained? Yes
Crate trained? Preferred
Need another dog in the home? No
Location: Columbus, OH
Energy level: low

Bio:
Paulding was found on country roads in Northwest Ohio. He was very scared and didn’t want anyone near him. However, he was very lucky that the dog warden worked patiently with him. With a little time, Paulding would sometimes come to the warden when spoken too but didn’t like any leashes. He basically did an alligator roll until the leash was wrapped around him and then he would try to chew on it. While with the county facility, Paulding also showed signs that he was having difficulty seeing. The warden was able to get Speak!’s attention and Paulding came into our care and a home where he was able to decompress and start to trust humans again. He now will tolerate a gentle walk on a leash and does well with his harness. However, he can be sneaky and is an expert at slipping out of most harnesses and collars.

Shortly after coming to Speak, we got him in to see an Ophthalmologist who examined him and said that he has a degenerative condition and will eventually have total loss of sight. At this point he still has minimal peripheral sight but that is slowly going away. He doesn’t need any medications at this time but needs to be monitored for possible future cataracts and then additional possible side effects of his condition. He also was favoring his right hip so we got him into an excellent vet who specializes in orthopedic conditions in dogs. X-rays said he is ok but has some joint issues. He is now taking a joint supplement and moving much better. His low energy level was noted and the vet joked that he is just like a sloth.

Now that he is feeling better and trusting more, he is doing great in the fenced yard and gets along well with the older or lesser energy dogs in his foster home. He does get a little grumpy if he senses a high energy dog near him but hasn’t bitten them. He would most likely do best with older kids that understand he needs a little time to get comfortable with them and wouldn’t startle him since he doesn’t see well.

He truly is a hoarder. Toys, blankets, clothes and pretty much anything he finds in his reach, even an empty pop bottle that fell on the floor. I have to clear out his cage each week. Recently, Paulding started coming over to me each morning shortly after we get up and rubs his butt up on my leg for some butt scratches. He is VERY food motivated and is best when fed in his cage so there are no interruptions while he is eating. He is right at my feet with the other dogs every morning for his peanut butter treat with his joint supplement. He is continuing to gain trust in his foster family and just needs a family and home with patience and lots of love.

Paulding is up to date on his vaccines and prevention. He also is neutered. Can you help this sweet, low maintenance guy continue to build trust in humans again and provide him a warm and loving home?

***PLEASE READ*** WE DO NOT RESPOND TO PETFINDER OR EMAIL INQUIRIES.
