I’m such a sweetheart. I’m smart and silly and playful and tons of fun. I can be shy too, until I get to know you. Once we bond, though, you’ll find that you have a constant companion and a buddy for life. I just want to be with you, experiencing all the fun and adventure that life holds. I haven’t had that chance before, but I’m ready! My new life will start the day that you come to adopt me. I can’t wait!

I’m a darling, 7-month-old, 25-pound (and still growing!) Shepherd mix, with soft puppy fur, the cutest ears, gentle eyes, and a charming, unassuming, yet spunky, delightful personality. I’m already mostly housebroken, too, as long as you keep me on a structured schedule and get me out frequently. Please stay patient with me when I have accidents, though. An adjustment period is perfectly normal, especially for a young dog like me who is still learning. I was transferred to Wayside from a rural shelter in Texas that didn’t have space for me. I don’t think I’ve ever had a real home before. And the big shelter sometimes feels stressful and lonely and confusing. I was filled with excitement and anticipation when I was chosen to spend several weeks in a loving foster home. It was an incredible time and such a gift to get a break from shelter life. While I was there, I learned manners, but also how it feels to be a beloved member of a real family. That felt so nice. I’m back at the shelter now, feeling rested and rejuvenated. Just waiting for you!

Everything about living in a home was new and strange to me, so Foster Mom let me do my own thing at my own pace as I settled in, which helped to put me at ease. Still, those first several days were pretty terrifying, as I was afraid to move about the house or make myself at home. Foster Mom let me decide when I was ready to approach people, and I soon started to gain confidence and build trust. I could finally relax! I was mostly well behaved in my home, especially for an inexperienced young dog. I didn’t destroy anything and I didn’t require constant supervision. I like to keep busy, though, so Foster Mom kept plenty of toys around for me. I’m one smart cookie, and I like toys that let me use my brain. I’m a sensitive and gentle soul, so please don’t ever be harsh with me. My foster family stayed patient and calm, using positive reinforcement training with plenty of praise and encouragement when I was a good girl, which helped me to learn what was expected of me as I continued to gain confidence.

I loved the kids in my foster home, ages 10-14, and I missed them when they were away at school. I always eagerly and excitedly greeted them when they got home! I loved Foster Mom too, except when she told me that I needed a bath. Haha! I didn’t ever really warm up to my foster dad. I wasn’t aggressive at all, but I just kept my distance from him. He respected my space and didn’t push me. My family took me outside for potty breaks every 4 hours, which worked well for me. I wasn’t introduced to crate training during my time in foster, but I did well free roaming in the house or being confined to the kid’s rooms when no one was home. I didn’t bark much unless someone knocked at the door or I when I got excited during play. I successfully lived in an apartment environment, although Foster Mom felt like I would be happier to have a fenced in yard where I could run and play and explore.

I’m young and active, and I will need daily exercise to help me stay happy, healthy, and calm. I love going for walks, and I’ve made so much progress on my leash skills in just a short time. I’m not reactive at all when I see cats or other dogs or people along the way. I might feel startled at times as I’m getting used to and familiar with my new environment. The more positive experiences I have, the more confidence I gain. These things just take a little time.

I didn’t live with any other dogs in my foster home, but I have met several dogs during my time at the shelter. I’m happiest with polite dogs who will let me go at my own pace and who will give me a little extra time to feel comfortable. The extra playful, high-energy dogs made me feel slightly overwhelmed. If you have another dog, I’d love to meet them before going home together, to see if we might be a good match. And I will need to meet any kids under the age of 10. I just want to be sure that we’re all comfortable with each other from the start. Mostly, I hope I can be an important and involved member of my new family.

All I’ve ever wanted, all I’ve dreamed of, is a home and family to love and care for who will do the same for me. And I’m so close! Spending time in my foster home taught me that I can do this! I’m ready. I’m ready to be there for you whenever you need a friend, through happy and sad days and everything in between. I’m ready to belong. I’m ready to be your dog.

Love, Patricia
