Nilo's Story
Meet Nilo! This beautiful boy has the ultimate puppy dog eyes and one very important (self-assigned) job in his foster home: official greeter and toy presentation specialist.

Every time you walk through the door - whoever you are - there he is, tail wagging, proudly showing off whichever stuffie he has chosen for the occasion. It’s his love language, and who doesn’t love a formal greeting with a gift?

We found this sweet, gentle soul in the shelter looking utterly defeated, like the light had gone out of him. Shelter staff said Nilo barely moved. He just…existed. Waiting for someone to notice, waiting for someone to care. We did - and now Nilo is thriving as a Miri's boy. He settled into his foster home beautifully and immediately made it immediately clear that he only needs two things from life: his human and his stuffed octopus.

Nilo is utterly devoted to his foster mom and wants to be near her all the time, lounging in the yard, on the deck, on the couch - anywhere will do as long as she's nearby. And after his human, his second greatest love is his stuffed octopus. He carries it around everywhere and especially loves showing it off to visitors at the front door. He even clutches it while he's sleeping - and yes, it really is as adorable as it sounds!

Nilo is housetrained, leashtrained, a superb car passenger, and great with kids and other dogs. This smart boy already knows "sit" and is even learning "wait" with the help of some salmon jerky treats. He's becoming more and more confident by the day and loves being outside, whether going for a walk (with lots of stops to sniff) or exploring the yard. All his foster mom has to do is take his harness out and he throws a full-on celebration!

He and his octopus are hoping to find a forever home that is generally calm and quiet with a predictable routine. Their ideal day? Some short walks, a few rolls in the fenced-in yard, a glorious snuggle session on the couch (with ear scratches, please!) - all interspersed with some long naps, of course. Nilo's not big on loud noises or lots of people - he's more of a Netflix & Chill in peace kind of guy.

Nilo would be happiest in a family where someone is home with him most of the day. While he doesn't love being left alone at first, he's fine once he learns the routine and can trust that his person is coming back. Nilo came to us very overweight, so he's on a strict diet. It's working - he's lost more than 10 lbs so far! His forever family needs to be dedicated to helping him stick to his diet and exercise routine so he can reach and maintain a healthy weight.

This beautfiul boy has so much love to give and is so deserving of receiving it return. Could you be the person he's been waiting his whole life for?

Nilo is approximately 88 lbs and 9 years old.

Fostered in Ijamsville, MD
Please apply at MirisHaven.org
