Nilla's Story

Get ready for a heartbreak. Nilla has already lived a lifetime before ever stepping into a home.

She was rescued from the streets of Mexico, badly beaten, at five months old, spent nearly three years in a shelter, then traveled five long days on a bus across borders in the hope of finally finding a family. For a brief moment, she thought her journey was over. Now she’s back with us, still waiting — still believing.

Nilla is a deeply affectionate, people-oriented dog who bonds quickly when she feels safe. She loves being close, cuddles hard, and seeks out human connection. Once comfortable, she is gentle, submissive, and incredibly loving — the kind of dog who presses her head into your chest and lets out a deep sigh when she knows she’s okay.

Nilla is also sensitive and very aware of her surroundings. She communicates clearly when she’s uncomfortable and does best with people who listen to those signals and let her set the pace. Sudden face-to-face contact or forced handling can be overwhelming for her, especially early on, but when her boundaries are respected, she settles quickly and softens right back into herself.

This is not aggression — it’s communication.

Nilla has met many new people and, with calm and confident energy, often warms up quickly. She is especially responsive to human emotions and thrives with people who are relaxed, patient, and thoughtful in their interactions. She doesn’t need perfection — she needs understanding.

Nilla would do best in:

A calm household with adults and kids who know how to respect boundaries

A home that values consent-based handling

An adopter who understands that trust is built by listening, not pushing

A predictable, stable environment where she can finally stop moving and start belonging

Nilla does not need someone experienced with “aggressive dogs.” She needs someone kind, respectful, and emotionally steady — someone who sees sensitivity as something to protect, not fix.

After years of waiting, traveling, and starting over, Nilla deserves a home where she doesn’t have to keep proving she’s good. She already is.

If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate companion and you believe that good dogs are allowed to have boundaries too, Nilla may be the one you’ve been waiting for.

Extra information:
- She can be good with other dogs but prefers if they aren't confrontational
- She is estimated to be 3/4 years old
- She ne`eds time to adjust but once she's comfortable (took <3 days in our house) she is a complete velcro dog
- She is NOT resource aggressive or reactive, just fearful. Outbursts are predictable and avoidable

We offer an adoption process that provides a seamless transition for both the adopter and the dog. A meet-and-greet with other house-hold pets is required to assure that all animals will be comfortable with each other. After your application is approved, your references are supportive, and the meet-and-greet is successful, the dog will stay with you for a trial period which varies depending on the dog. Every dog will need time to adjust to a new environment so we ask that you are patient with your new family member.
