Nikki's Story

Hi, I'm Nikki! I'm a 46-pound Shepherd mix with a sensitive heart and a cautious nature, especially around new people. I can be very nervous and avoidant at first, and I really appreciate when folks let me take things at my own pace.

If you get down on my level and let me sniff you without reaching out right away, I start to feel much safer. I do much better meeting new people when I have someone I already trust nearby as my safe space. I'm pretty skittish and I won't lie-I take a long time to warm up-but patience and calm go a long way with me.

Once I decide you're my person, my whole world opens up. I turn into a super sweet, silly girl who loves giving hugs and kisses and sticking close like glue. I'm very vocal and I like to complain, especially when you leave, and I may have some separation anxiety along with general nervousness-I sometimes whine while walking around just to let my feelings out.

I've got a big puppy side too, with lots of play bows, zoomies, and enthusiastic exploring and sniffing. Butt scratches are my absolute favorite! I'm a smart girl (even if I can be a bit stubborn), and I'd love to learn tricks and have plenty of mental stimulation and exercise to help keep my anxiety in check.

After I burn off my energy, I'm incredibly cuddly and always want to be near my safe person. I'm looking for a patient, understanding family who will give me the time, space, and love I need to truly shine.

My adoption fee of $300+tax covers the cost of my care and stay here at the humane society.

All Pennington County residents must also pay an additional $8 licensing fee at time of adoption.

Happy Adopting!

Humane Society of The Black Hills's Adoption Policy
The adoption process may take up to one hour to complete but we’ll keep it as simple and streamlined as possible. Here are the steps when you’re considering adopting a pet: - Visit our website to see available animals or see them on-site during regular hours, seven days a week. - When you find a dog, cat or small animal you would like to spend more time with, simply call the Humane Society of the Black Hills at (605) 394-4170 for an appointment. - Occasionally, our team is able to accommodate walk-ins, but as we cannot guarantee them, it is best to call for an appointment. -During your scheduled appointment, an adoption advisor will review the animal's history with you and bring the animal to meet you for an initial visit. - A second appointment may be made for you for a variety of reasons (Ex. You have a dog at home you'd like to bring in to meet the pet next). -Once you have met a pet that you think is your perfect match and you have been approved to adopt, your adoption advisor will take you through the adoption process, and you can take your new family member home!
