Nikki's Story

Meet Nikki 🤍
She’s only a little over a year old … and she’s already spent almost her entire life waiting.
Waiting in a kennel.
Waiting for footsteps to stop in front of her door.
Waiting for someone to choose her.
Nikki is one of the coolest, most electric dogs you will ever meet — the kind of dog people search years for. She’s high-octane, wildly athletic, and brilliant. Throw a ball anywhere and she will find it. Hand her a tug and you’ll feel the powerful, joyful drive that makes shepherd-type dogs so incredible. She doesn’t just play — she commits with her whole heart.
And that’s the hardest part.
Because Nikki has so much heart… and she’s never had one person to give it to.
She’s grown up knowing only brief moments of connection each day — a quick walk, a short play session, then back to waiting. For a dog built to bond, built to work, built to be someone’s partner, that kind of life is small. And Nikki was made for something bigger.
She’s dog social. She’s smart. She’s driven. She’s ready. What she doesn’t have yet is her person.
Imagine what this dog will become when she finally has a couch to crash on after a long hike. A yard to sprint in. A human who throws the ball just one more time. Someone who sees her not as “a lot,” but as extraordinary.
Nikki doesn’t need fixing. She needs a chance.
She needs someone to say, “You’re mine. We’re going home.”
Come meet Nikki. Give her the ending she’s been waiting for — and the beginning she’s never had. She's up to date on vaccines, spayed, and only 40 lbs! A free training session is included to help you build that once-in-a-lifetime partnership.
She is available at our Riverhead location for visiting at 324 Church Lane 10am-3pm daily. Waiting in a kennel.
Waiting for footsteps to stop in front of her door.
Waiting for someone to choose her.

And that’s the hardest part.
Because Nikki has so much heart… and she’s never had one person to give it to.

The North Fork Animal Welfare League's Adoption Policy
SELECTING THE RIGHT COMPANION ANIMAL Love at first sight! This is how our new companions usually get chosen. Thoughtful consideration must also be taken. Some dogs need lots of room to run. If you do not already have a fenced in yard, consider the cost of a suitable fence. If a fence is not possible do you have time for long walks? Long haired animals need a lot of brushing. Do you have time for this? Some may also require professional grooming. Can you pay for this? Younger animals will need training, which will involve substantial investments of both time and money. Please also consider who will be sharing your home with your new companion. A home with elderly people may not be the right fit for a large, high energy dog. A home with very young children may not be the right fit for very young puppies or kittens. Do you have other pets in your home? We test our shelter animals for general compatibility but recommend that if you have existing pets a “meet and greet” be set
