Nieves aka Nelly's Story
Meet Nieves aka Nelly!

This adorable young Border Collie mix girl is one of 32 lucky dogs who came into our rescue program here in Oregon from our incredible rescue partners across Mexico-including Cancun, Mexico City, and San Felipe in Baja California Sur. This pup's journey covered lots and lots of miles, all leading her here to the Pacific Northwest.

Nieve (affectionately known as Nelly) is ready to meet YOU!

Nelly is an incredibly loving, intelligent, and loyal young Border Collie mix who's ready to find a patient and understanding home where she can continue to grow into the amazing dog she's meant to be. At just over a year old, she's still very much like a puppy - full of curiosity, affection, and potential. Every day, her personality shines through a little more, and the more comfortable she feels, the more her playful and silly side comes out.

Nelly bonds deeply with her people and loves to be near them. She's happiest when she can be part of the daily routine - following you around the house, joining you for walks, or curling up beside you for snuggles. Like many young dogs who've had a rocky start, she can get a little anxious when left alone, so a home where someone is around most of the day (or where she has another friendly dog for company) would be ideal. With time, reassurance, and consistency, we believe she'll continue to gain confidence and independence.

She's a quick learner and very responsive to gentle guidance. At night, she sleeps soundly and loves to snuggle up close, and she already has found her safe space in her crate.

Nelly walks nicely on a leash most of the time, though she can get excited when she sees other dogs, people, or wildlife - typical for a young, energetic pup! She would do best with someone who enjoys walks and has the patience to keep helping her improve her leash manners.

She's a wonderful balance of energy and calm. Nelly loves playtime and mental stimulation (she'd do great with puzzles, training games, or even light agility in the future), but she also has a sweet, snuggly side and enjoys quiet, cozy evenings.

Her ideal home would be one that gives her both structure and love - perhaps with a big yard to play in, room to stretch her legs, and people who appreciate her intelligence and affectionate nature. Border Collies thrive when they have a "job" to do, but that can simply mean being part of an active, involved family who enjoys including her in daily life.

Nelly truly has the heart of a loyal companion and will make a wonderful addition to a family who can give her the time, patience, and reassurance she deserves. With love and continued guidance, she'll blossom into the confident, devoted dog we know she's meant to be.

Submit an online adoption application through our website today to learn more, arrange a meet-and-greet, and take advantage of our flexible 3-7 day in-home trial to make sure it's the perfect match.

Will you be this girl's lucky new hero?

steps to adopting

(OUR ADOPTABLE DOGS ARE IN SEPARATE TEMPORARY FOSTER HOMES BETWEEN BEND/CENTRAL OREGON AND THE GREATER PORTLAND AREA. THEREFORE, MEET AND GREETS ARE NOT DONE AT OUR FACILITY. TO LEARN MORE, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ADOPTION APPLICATION ONLINE AND OUR ADOPTION PROGRAM MANAGER WILL REACH OUT TO YOU WITH FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MEET YOUR NEW PUP!)

The first step to adopting a dog from SDH is to complete the adoption application. First click on the "OUR DOGS tab up above, and then click on the orange colored "Fill out an Adoption Application here" button to start the process). Once submitted, please expect 3-5 business days or sooner for processing and to hear back from us. Once you are pre-approved, your adoption application will remain on file with us for 1 year and it can go towards multiple adoptions within that 1 year time frame before it expires.

To finalize an adoption you must sign the adoption contract and pay the full adoption fee. The adoption fee helps cover our costs. On average, per dog, it costs SDH between $500-$700 for vetting/medical/sterilization, transport and other rescue related expenses. All dogs are rescued and do not transport to SDH until they are healthy and ready to be adopted. All dogs are examined by a veterinarian before they fly, which includes sterilization whenever possible, given standard vaccines and rabies (if age appropriate). Most dogs are sterilized before they come into our program, however if this is not the case we will spay/neuter them once they arrive at our cost.

Upon their arrival, all dogs are seen for a wellness exam by SDH's medical team. Once the adoption is finalized, any further medical care or treatment will not be covered by SDH, unless discussed prior with our medical team. All known issues are disclosed to the best of our ability prior to finalizing the adoption.
