Nellie (in foster)'s Story

If you’re looking for a gentle, loving companion who just wants to be close to her people, look no further. This sweet girl is the definition of a snuggle buddy. She loves curling up next to you and will happily follow you from room to room just to be part of the action.

She’s still working on her confidence with new things — wood floors were very spooky at first, but she’s getting braver every day! She’s also learning that her crate is a safe place; she currently prefers her cozy “comfort corral” (a gate system that creates a safe zone around her crate) and does wonderfully in it.

Most of the time, she’s a calm, gentle lady… but she absolutely gets the zoomies when the mood strikes! She loves people of all ages, including kids, but would do best with kiddos who can move slowly and understand that she can startle easily.

With other dogs, she warms up best with slow introductions. She’s very interested in them and is still figuring out how to play politely, but once she’s comfortable, she really leans on confident dog friends to show her the ropes. A resident dog could be a huge confidence booster for her.

She’s fully housebroken, loves her tiny squeaky toys, and will proudly carry them around on her walks like the delicate little queen she is.

If you’re patient, gentle, and ready to help a sweet girl continue growing her confidence, she will reward you with endless loyalty, cuddles, and joy.

Petersburg Animal Care & Control's Adoption Policy
Thank you for your interest in adopting from Petersburg Animal Care & Control! We’re so glad you’re considering giving a shelter pet a loving home. We do not charge an adoption fee; however, all animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and the cost of the procedure is covered by the adopter. We’re happy to support adopters by coordinating appointments with our low-cost veterinary partners for spay/neuter services and other basic care needs. Adoption Process • We prefer to schedule appointments for meet-and-greets to ensure that staff or volunteers are available to spend adequate time helping you get to know the animal. • When you arrive, please sign in and wait to be escorted by a staff member or volunteer before entering the kennel areas. • For safety reasons, please do not reach into kennels or attempt to touch animals through barriers. If you’re interested in a particular pet, our team will bring them to a meet-and-greet area for proper introductions. • After your visit, you’re welcome to submit an adoption application. Applications must be approved before we can schedule a meet-and-greet with your family pets. • Meet-and-greets with personal pets are by appointment only, and for safety, two staff members must be present to handle all animals involved. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make each match the best fit possible — both for our animals and their future families.
