Natalia's Story

In a Comox ! Mainland Foster & Looking for a Loving FurEver Home

~ READY TO FIND A LOVING FAMILY
She was standing at the front door when they left for their morning walk. She was calm when she saw the other dogs and moved a bit to allow them to get by. It’s not uncommon for some neighbors to allow their dogs loose on in the neighborhood, so they weren’t surprised by a dog being out, but they also didn’t recognize her. They didn’t notice anything specific bad about her appearance or her behavior and just continued their way. When they returned about 45 minutes later, she was back, directly in front of their door and they realized she was asking for help. They brought her into the home and noticed her breathing was a bit strange and she seemed a bit weak. They immediately took her to the vet where they discovered a traumatic injury. Her diaphragm was completely ruptured, so the organs from the lower thorax were in the upper thorax. Her heart was pushed to the left with both the stomach and the liver in the upper area. Her lungs and heart couldn’t function properly. Being hit by a car or motorcycle was ruled out as she had no broken bones. The suspicion is that she was kicked in the abdomen with a great amount of force. The first step in her care was to improve her blood work and then she underwent major surgery to repair the damage. Thanks to an amazing surgeon, she survived the surgery and everything was back where it was supposed to be. Her cardiac rhythm isn’t completely normal. She has a strong and regular heartbeat for a number of beats and then there is a pause before the next beat. It has continued to improve in the weeks since her surgery, but it may never be normal (or it may continue to improve slowly over the next weeks and months to a point where no issue remains). She plays, runs, jumps, ruff houses and acts like she never had an issue, and this lovely pup is now ready for adoption.

Natalia is about 1.5 years old, weighs 5 kg and is a Chihuahua mix.

This spunky girl is full of life. She loves to play, she loves toys, she loves food; she simply loves life…she came so close to losing it that you can’t blame her. Natalia is great with people although she won’t jump into your lap. She will climb into it when sitting next to you on the couch, but she has never jumped into a lap from the ground. Natalia loves going for walks and is doing well on the leash but still pulls. Exploring new smells is very high on her list of favorite things in the world. She does well seeing new dogs on the walk, with a variety of reactions from….” please let me meet them”, to “whatever”, to “I must bark at them”. She never lunges or goes for others, but a good bark is sometimes exactly what she thinks is needed. Natalia is great playing with her foster pack and thinks she’s as big as they are (both 20kg+), they have some epic play sessions, but she can also entertain herself with toys or chew bones. This spunky girl is mouthy and although she doesn’t bite down, we are working hard to teach her that putting her mouth on someone’s hand is not acceptable. For that reason, we don’t think a home with smaller children would be a good match. She would love them, but this behavior could create issues that no one wants. Natalia would love a home that includes her in activities and keeps her engaged. She can be a couch potato as needed, but only if she gets her exercise and play time every day. If you need a little Natalia in your life, or know someone who does, please apply to make this adorable girl a part of your family.

Natalia’s adoption fee is $600.00, which includes her flight, spay, vaccinations, and full vetting.
