Nanook's Story

Meet Nanook, the girl with a wild spirit and tender heart!

At 5 years old and 40 pounds, Nanook is a striking girl with bright eyes and a personality as wild and beautiful as her looks. We believe she may be a dingo mix based on her appearance and spirited nature, but what truly defines her is not her breed. It is her enormous and tender heart! Nanook loves deeply, bonds hard, and gives her whole self to the people she trusts. She feels everything in a big way, joy included.

Nanook was adopted as a puppy in 2021, but in November 2025 she was abandoned at a dog park in New Braunfels. When she arrived at our facility, she was underweight, filthy, and frightened of nearly everything, especially men. For the first few weeks she would cower and urinate when given attention. With patience, consistency, and kindness, she has truly transformed! She is now at a healthy weight, stronger in both body and spirit, and learning that the world can be safe.

Nanook is quirky, high spirited, and endlessly playful. She adores toys she can shake and toss, and will even bark at them as if she is having a full conversation. Playtime is her joy, and she throws herself into it with full enthusiasm.

She is incredibly sweet and affectionate once she opens up. One of her favorite things is to plop into your lap, roll around dramatically, and gently mouth your hand in playful adoration. Because she feels excitement so intensely, she can become overstimulated and may jump or mouth too hard. She needs a strong leader who can recognize when she is getting worked up, end play appropriately, and help her reset. With clear boundaries and structure, she responds beautifully.

Walks may start off energetic, but with guidance she settles into a steady pace. She is fully potty trained and reliably waits to go outside!

With other dogs, Nanook is still learning social boundaries. She would do best starting as the only dog in the home. She has shown that with calm and structured introductions she can enjoy short interactions on leash, but her excitement escalates quickly. Continued training and leadership will be important if she is to have canine friends in the future.

Nanook is not suited for a first time dog owner. She needs someone experienced, patient, and confident who understands how to channel drive and manage arousal in an intelligent and sensitive dog. In return, she offers fierce loyalty, deep affection, and a kind of love that feels earned and extraordinary.

She is ready for a forever home where she can feel safe, be guided with strength and compassion, and give her whole heart to her person. 🐾🐾❤️
