Mya - Recommended as an Only Dog's Story

This dog is being fostered in Dallas TX and must be adopted within the Dallas or the North Central Texas area.

NAME: Mya
GENDER: Female (Spayed)
AGE: About 6 years
WEIGHT: About 5.4 pounds
DOGS/CATS: Recommend as an only dog, unknown with cats
CHILDREN: Recommend an Adult Only Home or home with older, mature children

Meet one of our newest CRT fosters – Mya. The name Mya is associated with the Burmese word representing a “wished-for child” or “beloved”. This is a perfect name for this little lady as she is very beloved!

Mya was adopted from a shelter when she was a puppy. Sadly her owner recently had to move into an assisted living home and they would not allow her sweet dog Mya to move in with her. The immediate family had large dogs who were not fond of Mya. So the family reached out to CRT to ask if we could bring her into our program and find her a wonderful home to live in. We are happy to help this sweet girl.

Mya has grown up as an “only child” and we think this environment makes her feel safe and secure. She gets along with the other small dogs in her foster home, but she stays cautiously at a distance and does not really interact with them. Mya seems happiest and most comfortable without other dogs in the household, so an only-dog home would be ideal. Mya does love toys. She loves it when you toss them to her and she can play with you.

Mya also enjoys sunning herself. She is looking forward to the Spring and Summer months when she can spend time with you in the backyard as you garden and she relaxes in the sun. It is important to note that Mya is small and therefore will always need her human nearby while she is outside (there are instances where hawks or large birds will swoop down and pick up small dogs under 5 pounds, so you will want to be there to protect Mya). Even in a fenced yard, it is imperative Mya NEVER be left alone outside. We also want to emphasize that your fence must be very secure. Mya is so tiny that she can easily slip under the smallest opening in a fence, so she will need to be in a home with a solid, wooden fenced yard. Her home will need to be secure in all aspects, including protection around the front door.

When Mya meets new people, she is slow and cautious. If you are patient with her, she will warm up. But it has to be at her pace. You can see it in her eyes that she WANTS to trust you but just doesn’t know if she should. Mya wants to get to know you before she takes that final leap of faith and lets you pet her. We don’t know her history so we can only speculate. Our hearts hurt for her because of this. She is such a good dog, and just wants time to build trust. That is a fair request. If she feels like things are moving too quickly, she will go to her “safe space” (her crate), will gather herself, then will venture out again!

Once Mya knows she is safe with you, she relaxes and loves you. Mya loves her foster family. Mya spends her days happily bouncing around her foster home. She has a warm personality. Mya’s improvement from the day we got her until now has been remarkable. And we know with the right family, she will continue down this path. Someday Mya will trust everyone but it will take time. With the right family, and a little patience this girl will make a wonderful loving companion.

Mya is super smart. She is 100% trained on potty pads from her prior family. We are now teaching her to go outside to potty and she has been doing great. At night she sleeps quietly in her doggy bed in a crate. We keep the door open but she is quiet and comfortable there. Due to the cold and icy weather, we have not begun to train her on a harness and leash yet.

Mya is about 6 years old. She is a tiny 5.4 pounds which is a perfect size for her. Note she loves food and treats. Her new family will want to measure her food so she does not put on too much weight which can contribute to heart issues long term! Mya has a beautiful tan coat and the cutest little apple shaped head. Evidently Mya had an injured leg when she was a puppy (we were told it had been a broken leg). It healed many years ago. You may see her lift her leg a bit when she runs, but it does not seem to bother her and she gets around great.

A perfect home will be one that is laid back with moderate activity. Mya would love being an only dog where she could get all the attention and love. She is so loyal. She does react (bark) when she hears noise she is not familiar with, but settles down fairly quickly. We do not think she would do well in an apartment environment. There are no children in her foster home. We think she would do well in an all adult home or a home with older, mature children (13 and older). But know that she is not the type of dog who wants to run and play with kids. She would rather watch TV with them – LOL. With a little patience she will make a wonderful companion. She is the sweetest girl, and just wants to be cuddled and loved.

Mya is being fostered in the Dallas-Fort Worth (Texas) area. She is ready for adoption.

This dog is a CRT rescue. Reference checks, adoption contract and $300.00 adoption donation required.

As part of our mission to reduce the number of unwanted and sick dogs, we require that all current pets are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and taking heart worm prevention. Applications will not be considered if one or more of these requirements are not met.

After filling out an adoption application (found at http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/adoption-application/), please email DFWCoordinator@chihuahua-rescue.com if you are interested in this dog.
