Moose's Story

Moose is a handsome 8-year-old HavanesePoodle mix who came into rescue as an owner surrender and is now learning what it means to feel safe, comfortable, and understood. He's a thoughtful and sensitive older gentleman who is looking for a quiet home that will give him space and time to warm up to new people and a new environment.

Moose has made wonderful progress in foster care. He knows several helpful cues including sit, down, crate, jump up, and no, and he is now walking nicely on leash. He does well with the resident dogs in his foster home and tends to be submissive and respectful around them. While car rides were overwhelming at first, Moose is slowly gaining confidence and will now settle enough to take in the view once he relaxes. At home, he loves being close to his trusted people and especially enjoys sleeping on the bed, soaking up that quiet companionship.

Moose does not enjoy frequent or firm touching and can become reactive when he feels pressured, particularly in stressful situations like vet visits, where a muzzle is used to help him feel secure. With his foster, however, Moose has made big strideshe now enjoys gentle petting, seeks closeness, and shows affection on his own terms. He is nervous around loud noises and sudden movements, and as an older dog with some joint sensitivity, he benefits from calm handling and respect for his physical comfort.

Moose requires a strict diet of a prescription urinary food as he has an extensive history of bladder stones. He is also on daily medication to support his urinary health and this will also need to be given for life, along with encouraging water intake and adding water to his food to ensure he's getting lots. Due to allergies, Moose also receives daily allergy medication. A 1 month supply of all of his medication and prescription diet will be included with his adoption. This sweet boy has received quite a lot of medical care since arriving with Precious Paws, including a cystotomy (to remove bladder stones) and a full dental surgery so his mouth is much happier and healthier!

Moose's ideal home is a quiet, patient household with plenty of space and a predictable routine. He would do best in an adult-only household with someone who is home more than not as she does suffer from separation anxiety and is quite noisy when he's away from his person. A calm environment, gentle leadership, and people who are willing to let trust grow naturally will help Moose continue to flourish.

Moose definitely requires more care than some, and he is such a sweet, gentle at heart, boy that he's totally worth it! For the right family, earning his trust and watching him relax into companionship will be profoundly rewarding. With patience, respect, and a peaceful home, Moose will be a loyal presence who shows his love in quiet, meaningful ways.

Our adoption fees cover all up to date veterinary needs, including but not limited to: full veterinary examination, age appropriate vaccinations, fecal test and parasite prevention, wellness bloodwork, spay or neuter, and microchip. All dogs will be started on a 6 week trial of pet insurance after adoption. Local adopters can take advantage of 50% off a training course at Ruff Haus in Barrie (www.ruffhaus.ca) and all adopters will also be signed up for Petcademy to offer 30 days of free text-based behavioural support.
Please visit our website www.preciouspawsrescue.ca to submit an adoption application.

Precious Paws Rescue's Adoption Policy
Before inquiring about a specific dog for adoption, please ensure you have read their complete bio. We try to provide a complete description of each dog’s preferences in their write up including whether they are good with children and/or other pets. Adoption fees for each dog are also listed in their bio. If you still have questions about a dog you’re interested in please send us a message and one of our volunteers will respond as soon as possible. The first step if you are interested in adopting one of our available dogs is to complete our online Adoption Application at www.preciouspawsrescue.ca. Once your application is received one of our volunteers will review it and then get in touch with you to schedule a time for an interview. We will request a Zoom interview with you, so that we can complete your “phone interview” and “home visit” all at once. If these applications are not available to you we will schedule your phone interview first and, following that, we will schedule a home visit where a volunteer visits to meet all family members and see where the dog would be living. Our focus is on making the best match, not only for our rescue dogs, but also for our adoptive families. We want our adoptions to be successful for all involved so please understand that our adoption process is in place to ensure this happens. If you have any questions please get in touch!
