***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico***<br/><br/>Hi, I'm Montana <br/>A little shy at first... but give me a moment, and I'll be your most loyal lovebug. <br/><br/>I used to be what people call “a hard-to-catch street dog.” For months, kind rescuers tried to approach me, but I wasn't ready to trust anyone. I was dealing with a painful case of mange, and in a well-meaning but very harmful attempt to help, someone poured motor oil on me. Under the hot sun, it burned my skin terribly. I was in agony and didn't know how to ask for help — until one day, a group of real-life angels finally earned my trust and brought me to safety. They rushed me to the vet, treated my injuries, and gave me the care I had never known before. <br/><br/>Now, you'd barely recognize me! My fur has grown back beautifully, my body has healed, and more importantly — so has my spirit. I've blossomed into a happy, silly, affectionate girl who is full of life and love. I still have a slight limp from an old injury on my front paw, but it doesn't slow me down one bit. I run, wrestle, and play with my fellow shelter mates like crazy — all by choice! It doesn't seem to bother me, but I probably wouldn't make a great jogging partner. I'd do better with someone who enjoys hikes and yard play, not repetitive high-impact exercise. <br/><br/>When visitors come into the shelter, I like to observe from a distance and let the other dogs know that something suspicious is happening. Strangely, they ignore my warnings and run up full speed to the intruders, welcoming them with jumps and kisses! Never seen such bad survival skills before, but okay. Live and let die. I mean, let live. Don't mind me standing there, just checking out the situation. It doesn't take me long to be convinced that if the other dogs are happy, I might be too. That's when I trot over to take a closer look. I'll give the intruder a few sniffs (but don't you dare look me in the eyes just yet — I'll walk off again, barking offendedly). But if you stay calm and gentle, you'll get your first face lick very quickly. I love handing out face licks! I'm really good at it — gentle, not pushy, just a sweet way to say “Hi, I like you.” Soon I'll be melting into your hands for chin scratches. With just a little patience, I turn into a total lovebug — the kind who follows your every step and snuggles up next to you at every chance. I just need to feel safe, and then I'm all in.<br/><br/>I love playing with other dogs, and I get along with just about everyone — especially other playful pups who enjoy a good wrestle match! I can get excited during play and may need a little break now and then to wind down, depending on my playmates' energy. But I also enjoy gentler play with calmer dogs, and I'm great at adjusting my style. I even get along beautifully with the shelter owner's 7-year-old daughter — but since I startle easily and need slower intros, I'm looking for a home without young kids. <br/><br/>I'm crate trained, and it's become my little safe space. I haven't shown any guarding behavior with toys or people, and I'm respectful at mealtimes. I may chase a cat if the other dogs do it first, so we're not totally sure how I'd be with feline friends. If there's another dog in the home, I'd love a buddy who's confident but not too dominant — someone who can help me keep building trust and joy in this new life. <br/><br/>What I really need is a home that can give me a bit of time and patience in the beginning. I've come such a long way already, and I know I'll thrive in a home that understands my journey and sees the bright, loving pup I am today.
