Meet Mona

Mona is a three year old female Chihuahua, probably a mix.
Mona is another word for 'character!"
Mona's story: She came to our program late February in an advanced state of pregnancy.
The first week of March she delivered two pups, boys. She took excellent care of her puppies!
For a few days we were not sure she was pregnant due to her weighing too much and even
after she delivered her pups she was overweight.
Mona is now at a perfect weight which can be a bit challenging because this girl loves to eat.
She also loves her foster dad too.
Mona is a one person kinda of gal. It is understanding that she follows her foster dad everywhere
because she birthed and cared for her puppies in his work-from-home office! And she has
always trusted him with her puppies, only him though until the pups got older.
Mona will follow Den to the barn, to the garden and through-out the house. She stays nearby him too.
She will protect him with all 13 pounds of her being. She is something else.
We have a barn cat who is very territorial and Mona even came to terms with the cat!
Mona leaves the cat food alone and the cat allows Mona to exist.
And horses -- Mona is fine with the horses and knows to watch those hooves.
Ah, hooves! When the farrier came, Mona let him know that he was trespassing - from
a distance of course. The farrier handed her a piece of trimmed off hoof while he scratched her head.
She ran off behind the barn to hide that piece and then came back for another and another.
When the farrier went to leave she jumped up into his truck and was ready to go with him!
Guess she figured he was the supplier of all those great hooves he was a keeper.
Mona is house trained, she is good with other dogs but doesn't really interact with other dogs much.
Mona more like co-exists. She has played with her pups and may eventually play with
another dog over time.
Mona would be great for someone who is home a lot, maybe has property and loves to have
company outside and inside. She is great in the car too. She is never on a leash here so not
sure about how she would be leash walking.
She is crate trained but does not like being in a crate. She would love to sleep with her owner.
She has been good at responding to verbal commands most of time and while she does bark at strangers and such she does not
go after them - she is more of a bark at them from a distance and hope they go away kind of dog.
We are not sure how she would be with children but I would say best for her to not have any
that live with her all the time. She is perfect for a retired couple who have property.
