Misty's Story
Meet Misty - A Tender Heart Looking for Her Forever Person

Some dogs greet the world with confidence and excitement.

Misty approaches it more carefully.

But behind that shy exterior is one of the sweetest, most affectionate and deeply loving dogs you could ever hope to meet.

Misty is a beautiful 2-year-old German Shepherd mix with a gentle soul and a tremendous capacity for love. When she first arrived at the shelter, she was very shut down and unsure of the world around her. With patience, kindness, and people she has learned to trust, Misty has slowly revealed who she really is.

And who she really is... is an absolute sweetheart.

Once Misty lets you into her heart, she doesn't love halfway. She forms an incredibly deep bond with her person and wants nothing more than to be close to them.

She'll curl up beside you. She'll seek you out for affection. She'll happily become your shadow. And despite weighing almost 50 pounds, Misty remains firmly convinced that she qualifies as a lap dog.

She doesn't need constant entertainment or endless adventures.

She wants you.

Her perfect afternoon might simply be lying beside you while you read a book, watch television, work around the house, or do absolutely nothing at all. To Misty, being safely beside someone she loves is an adventure in itself.

She is affectionate, gentle, submissive, treat-motivated, and extraordinarily devoted. There is something especially touching about earning Misty's trust because you know she doesn't give it casually.

When she finally decides, "You're my person," you have been given something very special.

Misty Needs a Very Particular Kind of Home

Because Misty is such a sensitive dog, finding the right environment for her is extremely important.

Misty becomes anxious and overwhelmed outdoors, particularly when she is on leash or feels exposed. One consequence is something potential adopters need to understand clearly:

Misty currently has difficulty urinating or defecating outdoors when she is anxious.

She may spend considerable time outside on leash without going potty and then relieve herself after returning indoors, where she finally feels safe enough to relax.

Simply taking her on longer or more frequent potty walks has not solved the problem.

But we have also seen something very encouraging.

When Misty has stayed with volunteers whose homes have private, securely fenced backyards, she has been able to spend time outside without the pressure of a leash, explore at her own pace, relax-and successfully potty outside.

That tells us something important about what Misty needs.

A private backyard isn't just a preference for Misty. It's part of her path forward.

Misty's adopter must have a private, securely fenced backyard with fencing at least 6 feet high, where she can spend quiet, supervised time moving around freely and learning that being outdoors is safe.

For now, an apartment, a home without its own secure yard, or a home that depends entirely on leashed walks for potty breaks would not be an appropriate placement for Misty.

Her adopter should also understand that accidents inside the home may occur, particularly during the transition period. Misty will need patience, consistency, positive reinforcement, and absolutely no punishment while she develops confidence and a reliable outdoor potty routine.

This may take time.

Fortunately, Misty is worth the time.

Misty's Dream Home

Misty isn't asking for much from the world. She's asking for the right things:

A quiet house with a private, securely fenced backyard (6-foot minimum fencing)
A calm adult household, ideally a single adult or quiet adult couple
Someone who wants a deeply affectionate, devoted companion
A peaceful, low-stress environment
Predictable routines and patience
Freedom to build confidence at her own pace
Careful management of doors and gates because she can be an escape risk

Misty gets along with other dogs in social situations. However, she bonds intensely with her humans, and experience suggests that she may be happiest as the only dog in the home, where she can enjoy her person's attention without having to compete for it.

She has not been tested with cats.

Busy environments can overwhelm Misty, and unfamiliar places can be frightening. She isn't the dog for someone dreaming of crowded patios, busy dog parks, or constant outings.

But that's only one way of sharing a life with a dog.

There is another.

Quiet mornings together.

A little face following you from room to room.

A warm body curled beside you on the couch.

A dog waiting at the door because her favorite person has come home.

A peaceful backyard where, little by little, she discovers that the world isn't quite as frightening as she thought.

And the extraordinary privilege of watching a fearful dog learn that she is finally safe.

Misty doesn't need someone to force her to become a different dog.

She needs someone who will love the dog she already is while helping her discover the dog she can become.

Give Misty patience.

Give her security.

Give her a little piece of the world surrounded by a six-foot fence where she can explore without fear.

Give her your heart.

Because once Misty gives you hers, she gives you all of it.
Misty at a Glance:

Animal ID: IEPA-A-18153.

Breed: German Shepherd Mix.

Sex: Female, Spayed.

Weight: 48.8 lbs.

Age: 2 years, 10 months.

Location: Upland Animal Shelter, Upland, CA.

Intake Date: 10/15/2025.

Incredibly affectionate and loving.

Devoted to her person.

Certified almost-50-pound lap dog .

Shy and under-socialized; needs time to warm up.

Good with dogs in social settings.

Not tested with cats.

Treat-motivated.

Best suited to a calm adult household.

Door dasher/escape risk.

Private securely fenced backyard with minimum 6-foot fencing required.

Not appropriate for apartment living or a home relying solely on leashed potty walks at this time.

Misty isn't looking for everybody.
She's looking for her person.
Maybe that's you.
