Missie's Story

A060199 Missie; intact Australian Cattle Dog mix; est. 1 year, 6 months; 31.40 lbs
Contact: Calaveras County Animal Services
📱 (209)754-6509
🌐 Website: https://animal.calaverasgov.us/
📧 Email: animal@calaverascounty.gov

Now, what is it about a doggy underbite that is so dang cute? Missie is part of a clan of dogs that all came from one place where they did not receive adequate care, socialization, or hygiene.

Our hearts hurt in these too-frequent cases, where neglectful owners have multiple dogs and don't give them the care they need and deserve. Through no fault of their own, these dogs have had significant deficits to overcome in order to progress enough to be adoptable. When cases like this arrive at the shelter, our dog whisperers carefully go to work, gently encouraging the animals with treats and slow, soft touch to accept and eventually welcome contact from humans. They are allowed to learn at their own pace that they are safe and loved.

Missie and her siblings all have good potential. Missie is getting so brave now, and her happy nature is coming to the fore. She was the first to break out in exuberant zoomies in an outdoor play yard. She delights in grabbing the leash of one of her sisters for a playful game of tug. She LOVES treats and is the most brazen about approaching to ask for more treats. And more. And more, please!

All these dogs are very friendly with other dogs, which is a real plus. They actively seek out canine friendships with new dogs, not just their clan. Missie would probably do well with a dog companion in her new home.

Missie and her crew apparently had zero leash experience when they arrived; they were terrified of the idea at first. They are all making progress, but will need continued encouragement to feel at ease walking on leash. We've found they are more comfortable with harnesses than collars.

Though she and her sisters all still cower at a sudden approach, Missie is a sweetly gentle girl and will accept touch when approached with sensitivity to her needs. With the progress that she has made thus far, we have high hopes that her personality will continue to blossom once she settles into a calm, loving environment.

Missie will need to be spayed before she can go home with you. None of the sisters have had potty training, but they tend to keep their inner kennel fairly clean.

We do not have info on her attitude toward cats at this time.

As always, a meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home.
