Mila's Story

?059353 Mila; spayed female German Shepherd mix; est. 8 years; 51 pounds
Contact : Calaveras County Animal Services (209)754-6509
or animal@calaverascounty.gov

This mature gal gives zero fluffs for other dogs, but loves to be with her people. She delights in all sorts of pets, shoulder massages. butt scritches, and ear rubs. And those ears! We are total fans of those cute, slightly cockeyed ears. ?

Compact, fit, and energetic, she is an enthusiastic ball player, though she generally disdains returning the ball directly to her handler. Hey, she's done the heavy lifting and would like you to walk the last few feet yourself, thank you very much. She also would like you to give chase for extra fun (in her estimation).

Mila adores playing in the water, splashing and biting at the stream from the hose. ? Why is that so funny?? We don't know, but we never tire of it.

We wonder if Mila performed watchdog duties in her life, perhaps safeguarding her previous home. She seems like she'd be pretty good at it. She is very alert to her surroundings, noticing and keeping an eye on every person and dog wandering around the shelter property. She is particularly interested in keeping track of other dogs, but hasn't shown interest in making dog friends thus far. Even our doggy diplomat, handsome Husky boy Chase (also available for adoption), who loves everybody, could not interest her in spite of his extravagantly friendly overtures and play-bowing.

As you may know, we do a number of behavioral tests on every adoptable dog. Mila passed all her tests—except for resource guarding. Thus, she will need a home with no small children.

On her walks each morning, Mila is very excited to get outside and has a habit of pulling hard on the leash. She'll benefit from some training in that area, as she's strong for her size.

Mila keeps her in her kennel quite clean. Though we can't make guarantees, she seems to be well housetrained.

Mila will need to be spayed before she can go home with you.

We do not have info on her attitude toward cats at this time. As always, a meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home.
