Mila

Mila was found as a stray in very dire condition. As emaciated as a dog can be and still be alive. What we don't know is how she got that way. While we certainly do see people who are deliberately terrible to animals, more often it's not intentional cruelty. We see people with dementia who forget they have pets. We see people who pass away and nobody realizes there's a dog out back. Sometimes dogs wander away and are too weak to find their way back. Sometimes people try to surrender a dog to a shelter and are turned away, so they drop the dog out in the country to "run free and catch rabbits." Sometimes there are underlying health issues and no money for veterinary care, so the animal is reported as a stray. <br/><br/>Regardless of how Mila got this way, we have her in our care now. One of our shelter partners reached about this shockingly emaciated Pitty girl of probably about a year old. She's skin and bones at just 15 pounds when she should be double that. The vet gave her a body score of 1/6. That's absolutely the most emaciated a dog can be and still be alive. Mila is just the sweetest thing ever and we can't wait to show her how good life can be. Mila has a good appetite which is encouraging. Still, she's in such rough shape that she could already be in organ failure. We'll have to be very careful and re-feed her slowly with a bland diet.
